Hi all

I am scheduled for surgery on Tue 7/17 and now I am worried about complications during surgery due to the fact I that I did not follow the preop liquid diet.< /p>

I started with a low bmi if that matters but I went from not being sure I wanted to do this to a set date in 10 weeks and during this time my Father passed.

I also went nuts eating all the high carb foods I have been depriving my self of mostly pizza and bread.:hungry:

I did still managed to loose 5 lbs but not the 20 that was required.

please save me from the "what if monster" :omg:

I know that feeling, I was banded this past Thursday 7/12/07 and I am still sore but it was worth it. I was scared too but I am more scared of dying and not seeing my children grow up to be productive adults.

I would say you should call your surgeon. If it's too risky they may want to reschedule. Better safe than sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I absolutely understand why you had problems with the diet. So, wait until it's the right time. I'm sure your surgeon will understand too.

Keep us posted!

hi soaf9 ive just been banded and i had a carb blow out all week before the operation although i was not instructed to do a pre-op diet. my starting bmi was quite low (33) so that might be why. anyway they did the op without any problems despite the nice ultrasound lady saying that i had 'a big fatty liver' . in my humble opinion considering your low starting bmi i don't think you should worry too much about the pre-op diet.. but when you';ve got the band fitted there is NOWAY you will be able to cheat the diet and believe me you will not 'cheat' for fear of doing some serious harm

Don't worry. No one is perfect. Just do your best from now until your surgery. You will be amazed after your band is in how much better you will feel and how much less food is an issue. I worried too, but I know it is the best thing I have ever done for myself!

I was a "lower BMI" starting out too.....I only had 3 days of liquid diet! But I say always be honest to your surgeon.....only he/she has the full story when it comes to what is best for you!

So sorry to hear about your dad. I know what that's like. My BMI is 48 and I'm thinking that's a little high but I think that every facility is different. 1 of the surgeons I was checking out said that if I lost at least 5lbs that it would help her (and me) a great deal. The surgeon I'm going with requires that I go on a liquid diet for 10 days pre-op. On that show 'Big Medicine' (anybody watch that?) they require you to do a liquid diet for a lot longer :-o In any case it probably is a good idea to discuss this with your surgeon!! Good Luck with EVERYTHING :-D

thank you all who have replied

I am even more scared to tell the surgeon, afraid he will cancel the surgery

My ultra sound came back that my liver was normal in size

I was at the office a few days ago and they weighed me no one once asked if I was sticking to the diet, I was down 1 lb

I was reading the papers that I was given at preop and it gives you the out line for eating 2 days preop it says

"all your heavy eating should be over at this point"

so i guess they know people are going to cheat

i know I am hearing what i want and I appreciate all your advice

thanks

My surgeon only required a 2 day liquid diet before surgery (standard) and I have a high BMI. I am sure everything will be fine, just let your Dr know and make sure he is okay with it.

Good Luck!

I am finishing my 5th day on my LD and it sucked ....everyday it sucked! I get my surgery on Wednesday the 18th . I wanted to cheat!! everyday is a struggle. I have had 4 cashews. That has been my only cheat. It will be worth it.

I am glad that Im through the withdraw I had the first two days. I can imagine having those sick headaches and dealing with the pain at the same time.

Good luck and be honest. The Liver is really important!

Don't be scared, I read some posts where some were saying they didn't have a liquid diet to be banded.

I didn't follow it thoroughly either, the last 2 days I did. Everything worked out fine, maybe you should tell your doctor.

Congrats on being banded, 4 cashews isn't that bad, I ate a small salad.

I was banded last Thursday the 12th, it feels good.

Sorry for the late response, yes, my doctor told me to follow a liquid diet for 2 weeks, it was so hard, every day towards my date I would say, "ok tomorrow for sure, I didn't really follow it til tuesday..I didn't eat anything, I sipped Water, broth and ate tilapia steamed with a half cup of mushroom Soup everytime I got hungry. I was told not to eat or drink anything after midnight the day of the surgery.

It worked out ok.

Have you been banded already?

LOL, Soaf,

I did not lose any weight until the 2 days before my surgery.

I have this stubborn body.

I lost 3 lbs the day of the surgery at the weigh in before they wheeled me in.

Don't worry, you did better than me.

Congrats on the 5 lbs!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
