Gain weight to qualify?

Recommended Posts

I started this process with a BMI of 39.2. Basically, it was suggested to gain 7 pounds to reach the magic number of 40 BMI. I've been holding steady at 40.2 for 2 months now. This month I will go for my 3rd appt with Dietitian and I have my Surgeon consult Tmro. Oh and a funny thing happened with gaining the 7 lbs, my cholesterol went from 217 in June to 143 in September, Dr had no explanation for me.

I had to gain weight to qualify as well. It was harder than I expected. :)

Did you have any problems with insurance because of it? Where are you in the process?

I didn't, as I knew in advance that the approval package would include that first weight. If your doctor advised you to gain a few more pounds, chances are he will submit your paperwork with the higher weight.

My son asked me if I thought it was "cheating" to do this. My reply? Nope. I can easily gain a few pounds over the holidays, during periods of stress, whatever. It's just chance that dictates what I'm going to weigh in at a particular point. Heaven knows I've gained and lost the same fifty pounds over what I am right now a dozen times in the last twenty years!

I had to gain weight too but ended up wearing ankle weights because it was harder than I thought and I felt terrible because I was eating terrible.

We talked about ankle weights, but my son gave me such a disapproving look (they were his) that I just gained the weight so he wouldn't think his mom was cheating! Now he has to do without snack foods in the house while I lose it! ;)

I'm 9lbs from 40 BMI and it is hard to gain that much quickly. I also feel terrible and just want to eat healthier. I'm having to buy some new clothes just to get thru these next few months. It'll all be worth it in the end right? I get my blood work back tomorrow and sleep study hopefully next week. I'm praying for a comorbidity so I can start eating better. I'm more than ready!

I gained 5 pounds to qualify. Basically, I just let myself eat whatever I wanted. For so long, I over ate but was always trying to control it.

Also, I lied about my height. They didn't measure, just asked. I always thought I was 5'6 but said I was 5'5. That one inch makes a difference for BMI.

Don't feel guilty about it. Do what you have to. I had been seriously overweight my entire life. Gaining a couple pounds was much easier than trying to lose and keep off any weight.

Good luck!!!

I wore ankle weights my first visit in order to surpass the BMI requirement... I do not have enough medicated comorbidities YET to qualify under 40bmi. I started at 41 BMI (219lbs) and that was enough for me! I'm 5'1"

My surgeons office made me take off my shoes and socks and pull my pants up to check for ankle weights! I ate a huge lunch and drank a lot of water! I had to gain 10lbs! Any other time I can gain no problem this time I cut it closes! My BMI was 39.99 thank god they rounded it up to 40! I received my approval last week and scheduled for surgery on the 19th. I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
