Cigna 90 Day Nutrition Weight Gain

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had issues with weight gain during the 90 day nutrition and getting denied?

My weight has been crazy with going back and forth and I have my final visit weigh in tomorrow and know I'm 3-4lbs higher than my previous weight. Of course I had thought my previous weigh in was my final one so I didn't follow my eating plan as closely as I should have since birthday and all going on.

Check the requirements for Cigna. I have Aetna and in the bulletin it says that you can not have a net gain during the supervised weight loss program. I gained during the 90 days and sure enough I was denied. I was later approved but that's a long story :) . But it really depends on the requirements of you insurance company. If it doesn't say anything about having a net gain then I think you should be fine.

I checked the requirements and I didn't see anywhere that it stated I have to lose or maintain the start weight. So hopefully it won't matter, would hate to have to start the 90 days all over again. :(

I have Cigna and my plan policy is that I cannot have a net gain during my 3-month supervised weight loss (can't weigh more at the end than at the beginning). Hope yours is different! (Anyway you can postpone your is it for 3 or 4 days and drop some Water weight?)

I thought the guidelines were pretty much the same for Cigna in general minus the fact that employer could opt out, this is the one they kept reading to me when I asked for the their policy

https://cignaforhcp.cigna.com/public/content/pdf/coveragePolicies/medical/mm_0051_coveragepositioncriteria_bariatric_surgery.pdf

I searched through the whole thing and I didn't see anything on weight gain or loss during the 90 day nutrition, when I called several times I asked the representative as well (although they can't be 100% trusted with exact details) but she said I should try not to gain but she didn't see anything in it that stated I had to lose.

I actually already had my weigh in on Saturday and I did gain 3 lbs from my last weight from Water weight for certain reasons, so I guess we'll see what they say as she was supposed to be resubmitting tomorrow or the day after.

Was your weight still lower than when you started your program?

My surgeons office is the one that told me no net gain for Cigna. Maybe it's not a hard and fast rule.

I have Cigna. My weight was higher on my last visit. I was still approved. But my Dr says if I'm higher on the day of surgery, he won't do it. ????

Yeah it was a few lbs higher then before because I hadn't been strict with my eating since I had no idea I had to do another month.

Oh good! Thank for the feedback!

She said she was resubmitting my paperwork Monday so I'm hoping they come back with a quick response and approbal this time because I want to get my surgery date setup and they only have one more spot for the week of October the 12th. Not that I mind booking into the week of the 19th either but I'd rather do it sooner if possible. :)

My Doctor said he wanted me to do a 2 week diet to shrink my liver and I think they said I might do 2-3 days at the end of liquid not sure yet though.

Awesome! Thank you for the info, I can't wait for a response from them as the anticipation is killing me lol but knowing that people are still getting approved even with some weight gain puts my mind at ease quite a bit. :)

I have Cigna great west and no one has said anything about weight gain. I've been on and off prednisone and with my meds it's so hard to lose weight (my lupus meds) so I'm praying they don't consider my yo yo weight an issue bc I hopefully file this week. I follow the diet 98% of the time and try to get my steps in and I've quit smoking!

Just got the call this morning that I was approved for surgery!!!

My surgery date is set for October 26th! :)

So apparently the weight gain didn't cause issues, my paperwork was resubmitted on Monday so it was a fast response as well.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
