Hi everyone. I found out that I have to have an IVC filter put in before the surgery due to my high BMI. I'm not liking what I'm reading online and just wanted to get some insight from those of you that have had it done. How did you do with the procedure and did you have any complications from it like deep vein thrombosis? Did it help with blood clots you may have gotten post-opt?

I have very high BMI as well. I'm going to read up on that too. Good luck!

That was quick. I wouldn't feel good about that either. But what I read says that they use them temporarily these days. So they get to do a later procedure to capture it.

@@Dar200 I think I'm going to ask my doctor if there's something else I can do. I feel like the IVC filter is a Kaiser thing. I know someone that had Aetna that had the surgery with a higher BMI and they took Heparin shots. I would much rather do that. On top of the research I've done on IVC filters I saw a commercial this evening for lawsuits filed by people who had it put in and had major problems.

I don't trust it. I've had Heparin shots too. They are just no biggie. Hope that works out!

Interesting. If it were me I'd go along with what your doctor says. There is no reason to place a filter unless your risk of a blood clot is higher than average.

To fordgirlalways and the good doctor. I should have qualified my response. I would have a strong aversion to that equipment, BUT, I always follow my doctors instructions. I am backpedalling because I got in the shower and realized how a flippant remark I made might affect someone else's life. My sincere apologies all the way around. I would discuss it with my surgeon further, then go with what he/she says. I have questioned doctors all the way through kidney surgery before, but when they explain things to me I have always judged them to be much better at their jobs than I am.

@@Dar200 No need to apologize. I appreciate everyone's input. My doctor is supposed to call me tomorrow regarding the IVC filter. I just want to see if I have any options other than the filter. Of course if there is no alternative then I'll definitely be getting the filter as I really want the surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
