What’s Your Worst Post-Op Memory (or Fear)?

Recommended Posts

One word.

Constipation.

That is all.

Dear lord. ..yes.

It's killing me right now. Ugh.

My surgeon recommend Miralax, I found out that the constipation was not all that much. But it was keeping me from passing gass. I also was sent home on gas x in chewable tablets that are available over the counter. That helped me so much.

More funny now that I look back on it.... But my first lucid moment in the hospital after my anesthesia wore off. It was at night, and quiet and the hospital I was In was small... Only 3 overnight rooms. I got up and walked to the hall pushing my IV and saw no one. I was the only patient at that time. I called for someone and no one answered. Turns out my nurse was in the rest room. But for a few minutes it felt like the intro to The Walking Dead! I remember thinking, ok keep your eyes peeled for zombies! Lol

My worst fear was pre-op. I was afraid that I'd wake up from surgery only to find out that it was cancelled.

I didn't have that fear pre-op but I did wake up from surgery and found I had not had the bypass I went in for. Problems with my intestines not reaching the stomach, and meaning I'm now on 30 days of liquid diet to try again next month. So now my fear is that I won't lose enough weight for him to do it next time.

My worst post-op memory was bad nausea. I was sick for at least 24 hours. They kept trying different meds to stop it. Either what was causing it (the anesthesia) worked its way through my system or they finally found the right anti-nausea med. I don't know. But I was finally ok some time on day 2. It earned me a second nights stay.

I had no gas pains, unless they were there while I was miserable and throwing up...I didn't notice ;-) Honestly, if it weren't for the reaction to the anesthesia it would have been a walk in the park.

I then had some bad stomach pains the first week. Diagnosed with acid reflux. That's been the only "complication" from my surgery. I'll take it. Considering I lived on Tums prior...I probably had it all along.

Eating, drinking, meeting my Fluid and Protein requirements - these were never an issue.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
