Comments from others that mess with your head

Your "gym friend" is no friend. I'd make it point to stoop to her level and give her some similar information about herself, and then be done with her. None of us need acquaintances like that.

Agree with other posters...definitely NOT friend material. Definitely a jealous hater with her own issues. I know her comment truly was like a punch to the gut, but living well truly is the best revenge. So please keep up the good work, and try to feel some compassion for such a sad sac, who clearly is not "winning" like you are:-)

That wasn't an offhanded comment or a mistake. As a woman, I know, and most women know, the true cattiness that can happen. We've all been there. I've quite honestly, been on both sides of it.

I got my first nasty comment a few weeks ago, about my loss thus far. In a professional setting in front of a waiting room full of people. I didn't say anything, because I didn't want to make a scene, but it took a lot for me not to. I'm still upset I let it slide. This person is bitter because she wants the surgery, and her insurance doesn't pay for it. Not my fault. Not my problem, and not my business. That's my attitude.

So I decided, I will not take any more nasty remarks from ANYONE. If that happens, I will get up in someone's face, as I should have done to that receptionist. I'm faster now that I am 81 lbs lighter. So they better watch out. LOL

I will say this, the best response after thinking how I will respond to future nasty remarks, is to give it right back to her! I'd say ohhh hmmm, that's weird, I lost another 10 lbs, maybe you need your eyes checked, aging can make your eyes go bad, but now that you mention getting thicker, I was thinking you looked like you had put on a few lbs. And immediately walk away before she could say a thing. That's truly imo the best you can do, give it right back to them. At least you won't walk away feeling bad, and they'll get a taste of their own medicine. :)

I was thinking about this thread the other day and wish I would have the chutzpa to reply something along the lines of "Your momma didn't do a real good job raising you right, did she?" But I won't say that because my Momma raised me to be polite. :)

I probably would have gone with a condensending look and either "Whatever" or "Really?" and walked away. I just don't want to waste my time with negative people.

I'm 15 months post VSG and have lost about 130 lbs. Earlier this month, my surgeon, dietician and primary care dr. got together and decided to change my nutritional macros because of an ongoing issue I'm having, increasing my calories and almost doubling my carb consumption. As a result, I regained 7 pounds. I'm having a hard time with the regain, both mentally and physically.

Anyway, last night at the gym, someone (who I would consider a gym friend) looked at me and said "you look thicker. . . I guess you've started gaining all your weight back." Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. I wanted to cry, but just continued on with the class. I didn't know how to respond. I don't think the 7 lbs (4 of which have come off) made me look any different and my clothes still fit fine, but there's always that doubt). I keep hearing her words on an endless loop in my head and I'm alternating between wanting to eat everything in sight (hello emotional eating) or restricting my calories down to nothing until the weight comes off (hello eating disorder??).

Ugh, why can't people mind there own business??!?! Sorry for being so long winded, but I needed to get it out and I knew you guys would understand how I'm feeling. What mechanisms do you all use to keep people from influencing you, your moods and the path you're on. I need help today!

I don't think it would be such a terrible thing to tell your gym acquaintance (notice I omitted the use of the word "friend"?) that you felt sniped at and really prefer to have those discussions with your Dr and loved ones. That's how I handle unwanted or unkind statements. "I prefer to discuss these issues with people who love me" shuts them down usually permanently.

I wouldn't go to any gym that didn't have a one-strike policy against c**ts like that woman.

Heard this song today and it made me think of this post!

You're beautiful

No matter what they say

Words can't bring you down

Oh no

You're beautiful

In every single way

Yes words can't bring you down

Oh no

So don't you bring me down today

Christina Aguilera - Beautiful Lyrics | MetroLyrics

This may sound petty, but I'll just tell you what I would do. Maybe you all are better people than me:

1) start spreading rumors about her at the gym and make sure she picks up on the fact that you are gossiping about her

2) deliver a KO comeback about her physical profile

3) tell each and every trainer and staff member about what she said so that she'll be on notice that she could lose her membership for acting that way again (actually not too petty...definitely do this)

Just don't get yourself into trouble. You don't want to see this b*tch kick you when you're down.

Even my own trainer didn't make that kind of comment when I packed on 5 pounds!

If it happens again, throw something at her, like a gym shoe. That should work. Seriously, steer clear of toxic people. She obviously has some personal issues. The majority of people would NOT make that statement. If your doctors increased your calories and carb consumption, it sounds like there was a good reason for it. Have you talked to them about the weight gain ? This may only be a temporary set-back as your body gets use to the change.

I have a simple response that I have used. "I didn't ask for your opinion". I was so fed up with a certain person's comments and then one day I just blurted that out. Kinda surprised myself! Anyone can tell her remark was incredibly inappropriate.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
