GERD a problem for anyone?

Recommended Posts

So I am still pretty new and have not had the surgery yet, I am kind of confused about which one to have now. I was all set on the sleeve until I started reading how bad the reflux is. Some have even ended up having to go back under and get the bypass because it had gotten so bad.

I already have a hard time with indigestion and reflux, I really don't want it to get worse! Anyone else experience this worsening after surgery?

Have you had an EGD yet? I had terrible heartburn and indigestion but was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia during my Preop process. They repaired the hernia at the same time they did my sleeve. I'm only 7 days out and still on liquids so I can't speak to the longevity but I haven't had an issue with acid at all this past week and it was still a daily occurrence on my liquid Preop diet.

I also had reflux before surgery and during surgery my hernia was repaired. The surgeon always prescribes 3 months of omeprazole to her sleeve patients. At 3 months she says to stop the omeprazole and see how you do. Some people need it forever and some don't. i'm hoping i won't need it again but i have a few more weeks to go before my 3 month mark. I'll update then.

I'm one of the ones who is in the process of revising from sleeve to bypass. I developed terrible GERD post op and recently found out that I also developed Barrett's Esophagus. I don't think this is a common occurrence, but GERD is definitely something I'd take into consideration if I already had it pre op. I couldn't have know this would happen and think the sleeve is a great procedure for a lot of people. No regrets from me, but talk to your doctor about your concerns. They will have the best recommendations.

Thanks all! I think I want to have some testing before deciding on a definite. I really would rather have the sleeve though by not at the expense of worsening the reflux. Guess we will see!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
