Vacation rant

Recommended Posts

So I'm on vacation with the family. Overall I've been doing really good, still aiming for for Protein first, and with all the walking I'm getting well over 10k steps a day.

The problem? Drinking!! (not alcohol..) So every meal we eat out, but of course I can't drink at the meal. I do ask for Water to go where I can, but it's also 100+ degrees here daily, so I drink it fairly fast before it gets warm. (I was dumb and left my hyroflask home, never again!) So I'm well below what I need in Water, and buying a bottle each time is too costly $3 for 16oz adds up fast! Never mind my hubby is always walking 10 steps ahead of me and never hears me when I say I need to stop to get a drink. And not having a drink available has me way off for Vitamin consumption this week.

I really tried to cope on my own, it's not his fault I can't drink when they do at meals and this was my choice to do surgery, but I so wish he'd be a slight bit more conscious of how it's different for me. I tried talking to him, and of course he was like how is this his fault. Bring hot and thirsty doesn't make for level headed discussions.

So a valuable lesson learned for me this trip, eating wasn't nearly the issue I thought it would be... Drinking is!! I will forever bring my hydroflask and some crystal light packets to make sure I have some portable hydration options.

If possible, just incur the cost of bottled Water and know for next time to bring the flask. You shouldn't jeopardize your health or well being over this.

Even even I have my bottle, I run out quickly when it is hot. I have never purchased so many bottles of Water in my life! Since surgery, it seems I care more about always having cold water than food

Could you buy a new refillable bottle somewhere?

Luckily (?) for me, I was addicted to Water LONG before my surgery, so I have practically had me water bottle super glued to my hand for years. I never leave home without it. Seriously.... I take it in my car with me even if I'm just running to the grocery store! It's been to three different countries and about twenty states with me! You will definitely get more in tha habit of having yours with you and you definitely won't forget on your next vacation!

I am a waterholic drinking over 80 ounces per day. I have been on 4 large scale vacations since last September. (I know lucky me)

My first 2 vacations were Water disasters! I could not stay hydrated and found myself not even paying attention to it until it was too late. Then of course the headache nausea and Constipation begins.

The last 2 vacations I got very smart about it. I carried my Water bottle around with me everywhere I went. I filled it every chance I got. Yes, I also spent a lot of money on purchased water in countries where I was concerned about the water.

Vacationing makes it much harder to meet your objectives. Over time my husband began to get that I actually need water and the right foods on schedule. He has adapted over time and now watches out for me to ensure we choose the right places to eat.

It will just take time to work through these issues.

Stress isn't good for your weightloss. I don't know what being married is like so I can't really comment on the husband part, but you have to just work out a solution for your Water on your own. No one who hasn't has surgery is going to understand. Before surgery if I was short on water at the end of the day I would just chug a 2 liter of water. I can't do that anymore and its hard to get all my water. I used to drink 80-120oz a day I struggle to get in 64 now.

Thanks for the input everyone. This vacation was a stretch financially, so I'm trying to pinch pennies. I don't want to buy another Water bottle at this point. Luckily I found a gas station that has $.79 fountain drinks, and they habe a crystal light dispenser too. The cup is Styrofoam so I've kept it to add more ice/water to wherever I can find it.

Glad you found a solution. I know how it is to need to pinch pennies, but as someone on these boards noted not long ago, staying hydrated is a lot less expensive than a trip to the emergency room. Please take care of yourself so you can enjoy your vacation.

Yup. It's tough. I fight this battle with myself all the time. It's no one's "fault" but my own. I can eat or I can drink but I cannot to both. That makes events like Water parks, theme parks, mud runs, fitness camps, etc. difficult and frustrating.

I went to a four day martial arts camp and we had about an hour for meals. We had little time for hydrating during camp and it was one of the most difficult things I have had to do post op.

I have finally learned that I will always have a Water bottle with me and drink at every possible moment or suffer the consequences silently. It's my problem 100% and when I am not prepared, it's no one's "fault" but my own.

Doesn't make it easier, though.

Exactly! I'll be prepared next time, no doubt!

I was a big water-drinker before surgery, and I also find it tough now. My struggle is at work. I am an occupational therapist and I work in inpatient rehab. I see patients all day, and we are not allowed to have our Water bottles in the therapy gym (Health dept. rule.) I have to make sure that I make time to go back to my desk and drink between patients. And if the day is really crazy it doesn't always happen until it's probably too late.

I always just refill my Water bottles. I'm a cheapskate of the first order. A couple of bottles of water in my bag and I refill every time I see a faucet or fountain.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
