Interested in the Sleeve, Dr. recommended Bypass

Recommended Posts

You can eat anything on both of you chose to. The book I referred to explains how to eat good foods you want yet balance out to not gain etc. it's really helped me grasp the whole big picture. There's no solid evidence to show why one works better than the other. Many surgeons have varied opinions on this. I just suggest read, look in medical journals and books. I've been researching 5 years to truly understand the surgeries and eating patterns

Just went to the dr. Today....I now have to really reconsider whether it is the sleeve or bypass .I need to lose a minimum of 125 pounds .....no ifs and or but about it.This new dr doesn't perform bypass(his associates )do.He only performs a 2 part revision ...so it would be band removal, wait 3 months then another surgery. Now this is the same difference.2 surgeries....:-(.Maybe the bypass is the way to go.

I've had to think long & hard too... Although I'd prefer the sleeve the RNY is what I am choosing since I feel it has great long term effects & enough research to support it

I think it all comes down to what you feel is best for you.....one thing is sure as day.The band has to go!

Agreed!!! More come out than stay according to statistics!! Many offices no longer offer in our region! Ugh

I would say that if you think you will have a hard time staying away from sweets, even though at a reduced quantity, then go with the bypass. The sleeve only restricts quantity but you can eat whatever you want. Sometimes I wish I had gone the other route because of this. But I know it's still up to me and my willpower!!!!

From the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery:

"Short term studies show that the sleeve is as effective as the roux-en-Y gastric bypass in terms of weight loss and improvement or remission of diabetes. There is also evidence that suggest the sleeve, similar to the gastric bypass, is effective in improving type 2 diabetes independent of the weight loss. The complication rates of the sleeve fall between those of the adjustable gastric band and the roux-en-y gastric bypass."

Gastric sleeve surgery has skyrocketed in popularity. In the United States, it now makes up over 60% of all weight loss surgery procedures performed, up from 24% in late 2011. During the same time frame, gastric bypass dropped from 62% to 37% of all procedures performed while gastric banding (e.g. Lap-Band) fell from 7.5% to 0.8% of all procedures performed - See more at: http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/gastric-sleeve-surgery.html#sthash.PdjJlFPe.dpuf

The sleeve is by far the most popular and still gaining ground of all WLS. Notice the band is almost non existent.

I think they want to quietly phase the band out....quietly.Real slick I may add.I see Governor Christie got the lapband...he has lost a significant amount of weight....if he had gotten the sleeve or Bypass it would be interesting to see the results in comparison.Like the rest of us he will see that the band is complicated...I myself never really lost a great amount of weight initially.I have become a grazer and a reluctant Bulimic because the vomiting when it does happen is unhealthy. My reflux and Gerd coupled with the vomiting is a secret hell.

I need to consider long term success.

@slvarltx. Wow, I have to say that's confusing. I was going with bypass at my surgeon's suggestion because it had the most long term data, was the gold standard, had better weight loss and didn't cause GERD. So hard to know what's right. I work about things like ulcers, strictures, malabsorption with bypass but also feel like I'd benefit from the threat of dumping with high sugar and high fat foods. I guess I just need to trust my doc, take a deep breath and go with her recommendation!

After having the problems with the band ,my body has been through war.Dumping is not something I would be looking forward to.

@choosehope I have found throughout this process and even reading on this forum, there is A LOT of confusing and contradictory material from doctors and NUTs. My conclusion from all of this is that WLS is a dynamic field of study and that we don't have all of the answers yet.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
