Sweet n low, splenda & equal-can you use these after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I use sweet n low or splenda now. Does anyone know if these artificial sweetners will cause problems after WLS? Is it the same as eating sugars which I heard can cause issues.

I certainly can't answer for everyone but for me, I use Splenda regularly, just like sugar for baking, sweetening iced tea, whatever. And it hasn't caused me a single issue. Whatever I cook, I substitute equal measures of Splenda for sugar & I can't tell the difference. I also drink gallons of the sugar free Crystal Light type drinks cause plain water's boring. Again, you might react differently, and/or your surgeon might not even recommend it for you. Just my 2 cents.

I've had doctors tell me that artificial sweeteners activate the same part of the brain that real sugar does and can be a trigger for food addicts and also mess up your metabolism.

Your use of artificial sweeteners will be fine (even preferred) after WLS.

I'm a fan of Splenda and Truvia. Stevia has a slightly different flavor than Splenda but still tasty!

I have had no problems with sweeteners except the slight aftertaste, but as I learn more, and can learn to be in total control of my intake I plan to use raw sugar for certain things like my first cup of coffee etc... , I've been reading a lot about sugar vs. sweetener, and I'm coming to find out that sugar can actually be better for you, it's what we use it in or consume that becomes our pitfall, ie sodas, energy drinks, Desserts etc. , but in a more pure form is actually healthier for you than sweeteners, like tea with a tsp of honey, or coffee with 2 tsps of raw sugar, it's about moderation, and frequency, my goal is to find a great balance in what I eat, learning the right amounts of carbs, fats, Protein etc. I really don't think low carb is a good long term fix, especially after reading an article of how Dr Atkins passed away, and also articles relating to diets and Parkinson's, and even Alzheimer's, these things I mention are not meant to start debate for or against, it's just how I want to find proper balance and stay healthy LONG TERM!!!!

Thanks. I did read in other posts some people have issues with sugar and dumping. I guess my other concern is will my body react the same way as eating sweets? basically just want a cup of coffee in the morning with sweet n low . :)

My endocrinologist told me the same thing, so I am going to try to eliminate them (and yes, I am a food addict) ????

The only thing that I was told was ok was stevia. I don't like it so I go without it. I am not a fan of bitter aftertaste especially from sweetners so I'd rather just not use them. I only had to have one nutrition class so all my questions weren't answered, but I do know from what I read you are better off without all the chemicals.

I have had no problems with sweeteners. But, once I reached my goal I plan to eliminate all artificial chemicals out of my diet!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
