Should I take the money and run?!

Recommended Posts

Ok. Today was a reality-check day. And NOT in a good way! I go into Hanncock Fabrics, get my craft supplies, go to the checkout. According to the clerk, it is "Senior Wednesday", and I am SOOOOO lucky to come in and get my 20 percent off.....only problem....I'm not a senior. Not yet. At 54 I still want to vainly hang onto my last less-than-a-year pipe dreams! Can anyone relate to that?!

Does the combination of weight loss, lack of sleep, and worry for a husband with cancer have ANYTHING to do with this?????? More than likely. Or is it just MY TIME to cross that fine-age line (get the pun???), and jump into "discount world" often offered to seniors? Hubs' tells me I don't look my age (clearly stating I look younger), but NO ONE ELSE is in the same puddle he's swimmin' in!!!!!

So, the dilemma faces me clearly...should I take the discount offered, or DENY the discount........and pay extra for the few months of "youth" I have remaining? What would YOU do?

AUGHHHHHHHHH.

Honestly, some places state an age for the senior discount....say like 50 (don't laugh, I've seen them). And if the clerk was younger, EVERYBODY looks old to them ;)

If it's offered, I'm taking it!

On another note, I was watching The Golden Girls the other day, and realized to my horror that the actress who played Blanche was only a few years older than I am now when she started the show.

Yes. THE GOLDEN GIRLS.

i can totally relate

when i was 54 years OLD hubby and i went to Friendly's (food, food and food of course :o )

i had a "fried" clam dinner - yes i remember, weird??

after we were done eating

waitress came back and told me i get a free sundae

wow, how cool is that!!!

then i realized that she thought i was a senior

i went into kohl's on a tuesday

the cashier reminded me that today is senior citizens discount day :o

IMO take the discount and run!!!

careful not to trip over your walker or cane :D

i like to say i was 57 years OLD when i was sleeved

Take the discount!!! Although it's not quite the same thing I still get VERY happy when people card me when I'm buying alcohol (I'm 31 so well past the age where I'm not obviously old enough to drink). I am almost always carded, so I suppose I have gotten a bit spoiled. The other day my boyfriend and I were out to dinner and the server carded him (he's 4 years younger than me) and didn't card me. I was like, ummm hello, do I really look that much older?!

Still though...I say take the discount. I wouldn't have minded 20% off at my Michael's trip today, lol. :)

My hair turned white at 40. From then on, it was "Would you like the Senior Discount?" My standard reply was "Of course". I felt they offered, and yes, I would like a discount, I really would. I was lying, my karmic goodness is intact (I think)

You guys are lucky. Around here, you don't get the senior discount unless you ask for it, no matter how old you are (or look).

I own a specialty shoe store and the majority of my clients are over 50. When customers ask if we offer a senior discount, we tell them shhhh! We charge a senior surcharge for being old and cranky! Age is like our weight, hard to tell when looking at someone else!

Definately take the discount! I am 52 and I definately look younger than 52 even though my grown kids tell me I am old all the time. I have been offered the senior discount a few times in restaurants and now even one of my favorite casinos in Vegas. In Vegas they call it the "Young at heart'" club. Yes, an actual club and you get free and discounted stuff when you are in that club.

Definately take the discount, you are young at heart!

I went out with my 55-yo BFF recently (I'm 54) and she was offered the senior discount. She took it. I was mortified. She was mortified that I was mortified.

She's of the mindset that, a buck saved is a buck saved. I'm of the mindset that, you offer me a senior discount before I'm 95 and using a walker, and you'll never get my business again.

I do realize this is my issue.

See, I'm recently separated and down 100 pounds. In my mind, I'm 28 again. Only more fit and taking no s--t.

I'm happy in my delusional world.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
