Hi Everyone,

I know this is a "pre-op" question, but figured I get more responses from the vets! :)

I am on day 9 of a 2 week pre-op liquid diet to shrink my liver before surgery.

I have only lost 5 pounds!

I'm watching my sodium intake and drinking plenty of Water. And following the diet perfectly.

My PCP (?) said most people lose between 10-15 lbs, but I am nowhere near that! Has anyone else experienced this? I don't really know what to think and My surgery is on July 20th.

Hey Stef,

Don't get hung up on numbers at this stage in the game. At this point, your not even really on your journey yet! The most major reason we do this surgery is get a re do on our metabolism. To date, the gastric by pass is the only medical way known to man to do this. Right now, you still have your same insides so, your weight loss will go as it has in the past. Don't let that fact get you down though! Right now, your standing on the edge of your major weight loss high dive with a shake in your hand! In a few months you'll be on that same board but in a way sexier bathing suit! You will be the girl who does a double take in the glass door when you see your self I promise. This is the hard part; the waiting to be on the other side. Also, no doctor should be telling you what MOST people loose or do. If there is one thing I think most of us find out on this ride, it is that, there is no patient zero in this. We all loose at a different rate, exercise different , find that different foods work different for us (after the prescribed phases). We all find our own freak flags! lol I really hope you find everything you want and need and more. Don't ever worry about being in some box someone thinks you belong in, just worry about feeling proud of you and all your doing!

I lost weight but it seemed like the last couple of days I lost more. The dr can tell if you have done what you are supposed to or not. The goal at the point is to shrink your stomach to reduce the chance of the dr knicking your liver. The weight will come off after surgery, don't worry.

Have any of you all experienced weight loss during the 3-6 month "weight loss trial" phase? I'm finding it very hard to strictly adhere to this as I know, (in my mind), that my stomach is still it's regular size. I wonder if any one has lost so much weight during the 3-6 months that they didn't need the surgery anymore?

Please excuse my ramble, I'm new here and appreciate any feedback you can provide!

I lost 18-20 pounds. Half of that was during the 2 week liquid diet before surgery. I've lost 104 pounds and im 6 months out. There's just no way the dieting alone could have gotten me these results in the time span of which I needed these results for my health. My health couldn't wait. i had diabetes, high blood pressure, ect.).

I guess the 6 month diet period is a soul-searching time. I've heard of people losing 30-40 pounds during the diet and that was good enough for them to back away from the surgeon's table. For myself? I was already, figuratively, on the surgeon's table the day I found out I was diabetic.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
