I have not had a carbonated drink in almost 2 years. I don't miss now - but sure did in the beginning. My nutritionist said no alcohol/no carbonation. I would think once you have been out for awhile - perhaps at goal weight a little beer now and then would be ok???

I've posted a few times on this site and I'm a little disappointed by the lack of responses I've gotten. Wasn't this site to help users new and old to the Gastric world with questions or problems they maybe having, and to help with advice from someone who has gotten exactly what you have done?! anyway my question is...carbonated drinks...like beer, I've read some people drink them after they've sat out and gotten flat but I'm very interested in what people are saying about BEER, can I have a few sips? none at all? has anyone commenting tried to have some after their surgery? any advice would be great!!!!! and GO.....!!!!!!

Start weight on June 3rd, day of surger- 222lbs

Goal Weight- 120 or less

Current weight 200lbs

24 days post-op and I've lost 22lbs

I just had the sleeve on the 17th, but my husband had it in 2012. He stayed away from beer for about the first 6 months because it didn't go down well. Now, on occasion he will have a beer, but can't drink any more than one because he says, "it just feels me up, so why bother." I think you may find you will have a difficult time eating a slice of pizza and drinking a beer at the same time or at least not be able to drink very much of it.

I personally haven't tried any carbonated drinks. My cousin however, is 3-4 years out and she advised me that she has tried beer a few times and it always always made her sick so she doesn't try it and selects something different. I certainly wouldn't try it so new out of surgery. I'm not even a year out and still battle with different foods so I can't personally see wanting to try beer for sometime if ever. I would talk to your dr and nut. We all have our own battles to choose.

Wishing you the best!

Has your surgeon or nutritionist told you that sleeved patients should not drink and eat at the same time?

Just sayin'.

My sleeve was on June 1, I asked nut about alcohol consumption for a family trip that would take place at my 8 wk mark. Nut didn't recommend beer but OK with a few sips of wine. She stated my stomach might only agree with only a few sips. I hope this helps.

I don't care for beer and soda I can take or leave. I'm on purées and can eat very very little - like 3 tbsp tonight - so I cannot even imagine eating pizza. It doesn't even sound good to me, though it may again someday.

@@VSGAnn2014 makes the good point about not eating and drinking at the same time. From what I can tell that seems to be one of the most consistent rules. I hesitate to say all surgeons follow it, but I've yet to see anyone say otherwise.

Did your surgeon say booze is ok now? Mine said its ok a month out but since I'm a mom I don't drink but I would assume it's safe if it's sips

So far, my experience has been a bit different than others on here: My surgeon told me alcohol was fine a month out, in moderation. I'm a month out now, and I had two margaritas (separated by quite a bit a time and ate an hour+ beforehand) with no ill affects, on Thursday. My tolerance seems about the same. Added to my calories for that day but it wasn't too bad. Had maybe 5 ounces of a mimosa (went minimal on the champagne b/c of carbonation and stirred it a lot) this weekend, and that went down fine. No pain from carbonation. I didn't try beer though - we only had bottled beer and even pre-surgery, that seemed too carbonated to me (compared to draft beer). Though I did take some gas-x before or after (don't remember) just in case. I haven't tried soda since - don't really want to! Used to love Diet Coke too much.

Basically, it varies by surgeon. Ask yours about it.

As we all know, how dedicated we are to CHOOSING to change our old, familiar eating and lifestyle habits and adopt new HEALTHY habits FOR LIFE during our first year after surgery dictates how much (or how little) freedom from struggles with food (and weight gain) we will have. Total freedom tastes REALLY good...

i drink it...just a small sip...burp, and keep on. i dont like flat anything. try it and see...but dont overdo it if your belly takes well. i was drinking too much soda at one point. cuz i love the burps! but it was causing other issues, so i cut back. and dont drink too fast...omg...painful! takes me 2-3 days to finish a bottle of soda unless im craving. beer, i almost never finish it...a few sips and im good. oh btw i dont drink regular beer...i drink the angry orchard and apple flavored ciders...or a specialy beer like the samuel adams thingamabob...good luck

Even if it is flat, I am wondering how a 12 oz beer could fit in my stomach!!! It would take me an hour to drink it, lol.

Actually, I have drank since my surgery. I had a trip to Dallas a couple of weeks ago (at 3 mo post-op) and drank several glasses of wine. I had no complications from it, it didn't seem to affect me any differently, and I still lost 2 lbs that week. I made sure to get all my Protein in before we went out, because for me there is NO eating and liquids at the same time... there just isn't room, it would probably make me puke to eat pizza and try to drink a beer.

I am under the impression that carbonation is a no no for life. I think if you tried it, the pain would outweigh the benefit. pizza and Beer are just a short list of comfort foods that got us here in the first place. Just the thought of a flat beer sounds so gross to me. I am thinking you're not getting many responses because people don't want to come across as being judgmental in their replies. My thoughts are if your big concern is when you can have Beer and pizza, you need to do some deep soul searching as to why you went with surgery in the first place. It isn't a magic pill and you still have to work really hard and give up some of the things you used to love and many bad habits such as eating too much, eating too fast, and eating the wrong combination of foods. I truly mean this in the most respectful manner. If you really are looking for Help, listen to those who are successful and I think you will find that the majority of the successful ones on here are following the guidelines set up before surgery and after. I wish you much success!

beer is calories carbs and sugar, the big triumvirate of bad things to someone trying to lose or keep off weight.

Even the lightest beer is heavy in carbs and sugars. Its just not a good thing, don't go through all this pain, expense, and work, just to derail it on beer. When you've hit your goal, and you are on maintenance and can truly ascertain how much work you have to do to keep off a beer, then maybe you should think about it. Until then it just seems alike a lot of work to do for some liquid.

i have a friend who had this same surgery that we did - the sleeve - she is going to be at her 2 year mark in September - anyhoo - she drinks beer all the time and she doesn't wait for it to be flat - it doesn't bother her - my surgeon told me that i could drink it after i healed up - but here's the deal - do i want to? Beer has a butt load of empty calories so i am going to have to really want those calories in order for me to drink it. When i do drink I usually choose something that has less carbonation in it - i drink wine - it still has empty calories so like i said when i decide to drink i fit it into my caloric intake for the day - it has to be worth it to me - because at the end of the day that is who matters the most - ME. ;) Happy Monday folks!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
