Hi everyone, I just received approval from my insurance and have a surgery date in August. It's been a long process and I'm so excited to get to this point.

I've read about a lot of people trying to get back to work as soon as they can - two weeks or less. Did any of you take more time off, or wish that you would have?

I took almost all I was allowed. I was allowed 5 weeks short term disability (100% pay) But I only took 4, cuz I promised i'd work Memorial Day. Take all they will allow you to take. You need this time to take care of YOU! Relearn how to eat, get out and walk, figure out a menu, and what you can tolerate, and what you can't. You need to take this time for YOU. REALLY. These peep who went back so early missed out on some awesome ME time.

Looking back I wish I would have taken two weeks off. I only took one week due to not having vacation/sick time available to really take more time.

This does not apply to me since I am retired, but I have a small farm/huge garden/small orchard and I thought I would get right back out, but found that I needed a full month to feel good enough to work.

I'm hoping to get my surgery during the week of the 20th of July! I only have enough PTO and EIB for two weeks, I would have preferred to have taken at least a month off because I know I have to take care of me! I work as a CNA/Front desk HUC. I know my job doesn't require a whole lot of me, however I'm worried that some heavy lifting of baby formula is going to take a tole on me. I'll definitely keep you all posted on how my two weeks off go!

Did anyone apply for FMLA?

My surgery is July 29th and I'm planning to take a full six weeks off. I want to use the time to heal, but also fully concentrate on adjusting to a whole new way of life.

I took two weeks. It was just enough time for me. I work in an office, no heavy lifting.

I did use FMLA. I figured better safe than sorry. I had plenty of time, but if something did go wrong I wanted to have that in place and the clock having started at the beginning. Fortunately it all went fine and I was back to work as planned.

I wanted 6 weeks off. My surgeon begrudgingly gave me 3. I work 12 hour night shifts in a busy NICU. Glad to not have burned through ALL my PTO but at 13 days out, my return date is coming fast and I barely have the energy to stay awake 12 hours straight let alone WORK! Hopefully I'll feel better in a week!

I work from home as a full time teleworker at my computer. I still took a week off. I was totally exhausted every day. The second week I ended up working 10 am to 4 pm and crashing around 4. The third week was a lot better and week four has been fine.

My husband took two weeks FMLA from his work and stayed home with me and waited on me hand and foot while I was recovering though. Without him it would have been much tougher. He did everything and took care of our 7 year old for those 2 weeks.

I'm a para-educator in a public school. I had surgery last July and had the summer off. Truthfully, I needed it, to get used to the eating. Physically I could have gone back after three weeks. I had a lot of fatigue early on.

I took 2.5 weeks and just returned today. I do wish I would have taken a bit longer as I am quite tired and still trying to figure out how to eat and drink. However, going to work did take my mind off of the frustrations of trying to get the right foods and adequate Water.... after think about only that for 2.5 weeks, I was ready to think about anything else lol

@@incredibleshrinkingnurse I too work in the NICU, I'm not an RN yet, but I'm worried about lifting heavy boxes or having trouble running around due to pain. Hopefully the pain only last a week (fingers crossed!!)

I found that the restriction on lifting (nothing over 10 pounds for six weeks) was my biggest challenge. I pulled it off ok, I just kept thinking about those very delicate tissues which had been cut and reconnected, and how easy it would be to rupture them, and how ticked my wife would be if I had to go back into surgery.... so I just hired strong 19 year olds to get my heavy lifting and major yard work done.... :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
