No SIPS but I had the full DS on 6/11. Heading into second week of post op right now. From my experience and others I have talked to in person...just get your fluids in, including your Protein drinks (my doc had me drinking 4 oz every hour I was awake) and walking every hour (short walks - really helped the body get rid of built up gasses). It has been smooth sailing for me so far, and with a starting weight of 427lbs, I was a good candidate for complications.

Including 7 day pre-op diet, I am already down to 389lbs. That included gaining 14lbs while in the hospital.

So stay positive, I would really like to hear how your journey with SIPS differs from mine (with the DS ) as our journeys progress.

Good luck!

Christian.

Hello! I had SIPS surgery done June 8th! The worst thing about it was the drainage tube, it was very uncomfortable until it was removed the day I went home! Mouth was very dry after surgery, but that's to be expected. As soon as you are up to it, do a lot of walking in the hospital to get the gas moving. I had very minimal gas and minimal pain. I was sent home with liquid pain pain killer, nausea meds, and prilosec. None of which, I had to take! The ONLY struggle I had during the first week was "head hunger". I wanted a cheeseburger, popcorn, etc... and you may "think" you are hungry, but really, you're not.. Week 2 for me, has been a little bit easier and I don't want those things as much as I did. My weight at surgery was 276, my current weight today is 265! Good luck!!

A drainage tube as in a gi tube up your nose? Or a drainage tube from your stomach?

Dr said hospital stay should be two nights. Im the most worried missing work. How long have you taken off and realistically speaking can you start working after 1 week at least from home?

One week should not be a problem, depending on what you do. I had operation on 11th and was back at work the following Thursday. I was in hospital for three days, by the following Tuesday I was back to sleeping in my bed instead of a recliner. Thursday and Friday were a challenge, hit the energy wall around 3pm, but I got up to walk each hour and had no pain. I work as a financial analyst, so mainly sitting in front of computers or in meetings.

My doctor's office stated I would only need a week, and although an extra couple of days would have been nice, they were right.

If you can work from home, do so. I found the worst part the drive to and from work.

Also, as to the drainage tube, I am sure she means the one from the stomach.

Mine was not an issue, while it was in, but the nurses at the hospital said that it can be an irritation depending on the length they make it.

Although I do have to say, the removal of the drainage tube was one of the most painful things I have experienced. It felt like they were pulling my spine out through the front of my belly. But it was a shirt lived pain.

@@stevodreo, The drainage tube was in my stomach. It caused some irritation and that was the most pain I felt from the surgery. I have to say, I am surprised that I experienced literally no pain. My incisions are just about all healed and 2 of them you can't even tell I had laproscopic surgery at all. A week after surgery, I returned back to work, with no problems at all. I work in an office.

I am 49 years old and scheduled to have SIPS on June 30. I know many people who have had RNY with great success. I have chosen SIPS due to my need for NSAIDS and Prednisone for management of degenerative arthritis. I am excited and nervous as well. I am terrified that I will not wake up from my surgery. That being said I have confidence in my surgeon. These forums have been an invaluable tool in preparing for my surgery. Please keep posting!

understandable why you have the fear as I do as well. When I had the lapband done I had someone close with me that had had it done a year before. It was great having a coach and a friend that knew what I was going through and he kept me pretty calm. On the other hand with SIPS I dont know anyone that had it. I too was recommended the RNY , but after hearing about dumping syndrome and weight regain I was skeptical of having it. Who is your surgeon and where are you having it done?? Its great to have someone doing the same surgery and on the same day

Surgeon visit at 11am Wednesday July 1st.

Shooting for mid July, the week of the 20th for SIPS surgery.

Been a long 2 years to get here. 2 years of BSing around putting it off. then first of this year I said lets do this then I waited another 2 months first week in March before going to the surgeon. I have attended so many information meetings over the 2 years. Then I was ready and did it. BUT I have Diabetes and it was not under good control so I had a 4 weeks delay with going to an Endo Dr to get all that straightened out, then a 2 week wait on the insurance approval. NOW Wednesday is the go date with surgeon. I have been excited, POed, now i am very nervous. Just a whole new life style . I will update with what goes down tomorrow. I am not working at my job these next two day i am working another location so I may not have access to my websites over the next few days.

I had my sips surgery June 30. I had a considerable amount of nausea with 1 vomiting episode . I was discharged at 3:00 the next day when I proved I could drink the Protein shakes and Water. Really, the only discomfort I feel is the gas pain and walking does alleviate this. It's difficult to get I all the Protein. I really do not like the sugary taste of the shakes. I like the chicken broth the best. I had IV fluids until discharge and ended up 12lbs over my pre-surgery weight. Today I weighed my pre-surgery weight. I would like to hear from you stevodreo. I know you had same surgery date.

I just started drinking Isopure, they are fruit flavored drinks (like a Vitamin water) but not very sweet. Just had my first one. They come in 8oz and 20oz bottles. 15 and 40 grams of Protein. They are a nice alternative to the Protein Shakes.< /p>

Another good product for getting your protein in is the Oykos Triple zero yogurt, 15 grams, four flavors - all smooth with no bits in them.

Hey so happy to hear how you are doing. Unfortunately I am still in the hospital till hopefully Friday morning.

My surgery included taking out my lapband wich made the surgery over 3 hours and very painful. The gas pain is horrible and the walking hasn't seemed to help. Dr said eventually the gas pains will go away, really looking forward to that day. Still on clear liquid diet and i hope that tomorrow i can start with shakes etc. I also have gained over 10 pounds from all the iv fluids. Im sure that within 2 days of getting of ivs the weight will come off. I did have a lot of nausea but they put some anti nausea patch behind my ear, and have been giving me Zofrin wich is anti nausea too. I haven't had any vomit episodes. .

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
