I am almost two weeks out from my surgery and still on liquids. I have tried adjusting the speed at which I drink anything from Water to Protein Shakes to very slow sips and no matter what I get hiccups! I have even tried adjusting amounts and temperatures. Has anyone else had this problem? I get them so bad it brings me to tears!

@ejones8979 I wouldn't risk it, still to soon. I didn't have hiccups before surgery but seem to have them a lot the first couple of weeks after and yes it hurts right after surgery!

I had them two times...the night of my surgery and the day after. They LASTED forever and hurt...and made me feel like crap. Made me feel so bad that I just loaded up on pain meds and knocked myself out.

I think mine was a combination of gas and irritation to the diaphragm from surgery.

If you are getting them two weeks out, it makes me think it has to do with the speed of drinking -- or -- drinking too much at one time

I had the hiccups up until probably 3 days after surgery. Was very annoying. They say you can hug a pillow to minimize the effect, but it didn't seem to help me; my hiccups usually came with no warning so I wasn't fast enough to grab a pillow, and yes, it hurt.

I found it VERY difficult to get enough fluids in the first few days after surgery, but it gets much better, trust me. I have no problem getting down 64-80oz of just Water alone daily, not to mention I drink 2-3 cups of coffee now also. This is not counting Water used for Protein shakes, either.

I don't understand either. ..I'm 17 days post op and get the hiccups EVERY time I eat or drink. .. but just hold my breath for a few seconds.

Wait.. U can drink coffee after gastric bypass????

My doctor said I was fine drinking Decaf. No caffeine until my recent 8 week post-op appointment.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
