June 29th Bypass Surgery

Recommended Posts

Since we are all surgery buddies on this post, I'll tell both all a little about me. My name is Shauna, I am 32 years old and the mom of 2 little girls (6 & 21 months). I am a stay at home mom and I live in CT with my husband, kids, 2 dogs and a cat. I've been overweight since I was 5 with ups and downs in between. The lowest weight I can ever remember being is 147...and that was after I lost 65 pounds by being married to the gym. Well..actually getting married and 2 kids later, free time and metabolism are not the same! I am at the heaviest I've ever been (besides pregnancy) of 251 pounds. Yes, I know, many people have a lot more to lose, but I've been living in this body that I do not belong to. My hips and back hurt, I get winded very easily, and I am very uncomfortable not only mentally but physically. My husband had gastric bypass a year and a half ago and has had a very successful experience. I swore to myself I would never get gastric bypass after seeing that he went through (he's a big baby when it comes to pain). BUT, here I am a year and a half after him at the mercy of the dreaded scale. It's time for a change, I have not given up, I have just hit rock bottom and realize I need help with this. It's time to actually live and let my kids live, without mommy holding them back. I am so excited for my future weight loss experience, but most of all, I'm looking forward to leading a healthier life and setting an example for my girls :). THE END

Good luck with everything! Keep us updated on your progress. We have simular starting weights.

Thank you!! I can't wait to start. I'm hungry today! But I'll get through it.

My first time in the support group. My surgery is also June 29th. I am nervous but ready for my lifestyle change. This is my fifth day on the pre op diet. I am doing well. I am motivated. It also helps to read everyone's experiences. I will just say stay strong. We will be healthy, thin and happy.

Welcome! Looks like we have a few who are scheduled for June 29th! I am not doing so well today. I haven't caved, but my stomach is cramping so bad it hurts to stand up. I ate a Protein Bar that goes along with my diet, but it had nuts in it. About half an hour after I ate it, I have these horrible stomach cramps to the point where I was breaking out in a sweat. I thought I was going to vomit. Needless to say that I will not be eating those Protein Bars again and if that experience was anything like what dumping feels like, I for sure will steer clear from foods I shouldn't be eating that cause dumping. M having a lull in pain right now which is why I am able to type. Ugh!!! Wth!!

Hi everyone. I am scheduled for June 29 too! I have a 5.30 am start and I can't wait. I am trying to get everything organized since I live alone and do not want to worry about shopping for food after. A friend is coming to stay with me for a few days. After that I'm on my own!

I go for my pre op tests on Monday June 22 and some more instructions from the nurses but apart from that I've not being asked to do any special pre surgery diet. I am wondering why I didn't get asked to do this?

I've cheated a couple of times, but other than that it has been good. And since I started the diet I've lost about 10 pounds. I think the diet will be easier once you feel full after only a couple of bites

My surgery is scheduled for Monday as well. My check in time is 7:45 and surgery at 8:30. I did well on the diet, lost 18 pounds with 2 days to go. These last couple of days, I have been getting a little hungry but I've pushed pass the hunger pains. I am excited and nervous about surgery. I wish everyone well on your surgery and let's Celebrate our new lifestyle.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
