Power Poses

Recommended Posts

I love power poses and have taught them to many people. The research behind them is fascinating and they really work.

I read about that research. Fascinating!

I frequently (or used to) have to give presentations to my peers within our profession, and took a few courses on public speaking and presentation....body image and how one presents themselves in front of an audience was a very large segment.

People do judge books by their cover, just as products you buy off the shelf, packaging is very important.

I did not know it actually effected us by raising testosterone levels, etc.

I will say, it has become very easy, almost pleasurable to stand in front of people now being a normal weight, wearing normal size clothing, and proud of your body....Power Poses come naturally....

Reading the article, I actually thought of times (yesterday actually) where I purposely had to assume low-power postures, sort of out of respect.....not to be too overwhelming.....but once me and this community got to know (and trust) each other, things loosened up.

This is interesting. For me it brings up lots of questions, especially related to gender and culture.

Another thing that is interesting is that it talks about how a power position is meant to take up more space, but as an obese woman, taking up more space is what seems to have diminished my power.

@@Inner Surfer Girlf, I know, much to think about -- standing out because of overweight issues was so painful....the power pose that has worked for me came from watching a Ted Talk a while back. The crossing the finish line arms up in the air - yippee, I made it, I'm a success -- has changed the way I approach certain things (I use it when I get on the treadmill, for example). And Wonder Woman above is actually not in a power pose because that supposedly-sexy stance is one of weakness, the one leg down does something to the pancreas. And probably projects a message of "take me." Let's go back to school and become cultural anthropologists!

Bandista, our power poses don't match at all.

That open-legged pose by WW says: Get ready -- I'm about to devour YOU!

(BTW, the "pancreas" comment I don't get at all. Where is the damned pancreas? LOL!)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
