Protien - how do you get it in?

Recommended Posts

I am having a hard time getting in my protien post op. I have been on Soup, Jello, yogurt, apple sauce, Carnation Instant Breakfast, broth, protien drinks.

I know I am not getting in what I need in a day. I maybe am eating 500 calories a day.

Any thoughts on post op full liquid foods?

Also looking for soft food thoughts.

Thanks,

I drink the Hood's low carb milk. Michelle recommended it some time back, and it tastes really good, and has as much protien per ounce as an Atkin's shake, with less calories. It comes in chocolate, strawberry and plain white milk. Haven't tried the strawberry, but the chocolate is good and the white milk tastes real creamy.

Split Pea Soup has slot of Protein in it just add a little Water and blend it. Also Hoods Carb Countdown Dairy beverage has lots of protein, it is in the dairy section of your grocery store , it is thick very satisfying and yummy.

If you check the labels on the Soups you are eating, plus the Protein Drinks, you may be getting more than you think, remember you can't absorb more than 20grams at a time, but a scrambled egg has either 6 or 9 grams of Proteins, don't have any right now to ck,,, bean soups have lots of Protein, a slice of cheese, , etc, a small spoon of Peanut Butter (I use about 9pm if I feel a little hungry, small) canned salmon mashed up, again, just read everything your eating to see what actually has protein in it and then supplement it with the drinks if your short on total for the day.

Thanks,

I just got started on soft foods yesterday and I had a bit of mashed potatoes with some salt, pepper, and butter. SOOOOO FILLING, so delicious, and it got me A LOT closer to my carbohydrate and calorie goal. I still am not eating enough to get my goal but getting closer every day. I go for HIGH CALORIC beverages to try and get the calories I need. Once you get on soft foods, try the Chick-fil-a chocolate milkshake with NO whipcream or cherry (bad for us), throw two scoops of Protein powder and some skim milk in... one of those lasts me for two days but it's a great way to get TONS of Protein (because of the powder and all the milk), it tastes DELICIOUS and it gets me some fat and calories. Keep in mind, once we can eat, that'll be bad, but for now, it's AWESOME to get us closer to our goal nutrition.

Had to chime in on the New whey shots shown previously. I have these, I acutally buy them from my doctor's office. They're really sweet and kind of sour, but they go real quick and it's nice knowing I got down a ton of protein! They're real popular. GNC down here can't keep them in stock.

I actually don't worry too much about Protein, haven't since being banded. I just choose foods that are higher in Protein and eat those first.

Immediately post band I enjoyed cottage cheese- maybe with a little oj concentrate to sweeten it, tuna, cream cheese, goat's cheese with chives, sugar free popsicles, certain Soups. The cottage cheese felt like the most terrific meal when I was allowed to go past liquids.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
