Anyone suffer from GERD? i do but...

Recommended Posts

Since i had my sleeve done on June 2nd i have not had one bit of heartburn or acid at all. Before surgery i was having episodes everyday quite sever that felt like heart attacks with pains in the left arm and so on. i dunno maybe its just because its so soon but ive ate all kinds of spicy GERD triggering Soups and have been fine. I was told it would likely get worse but its gone for now at least

Well, you're one of the lucky ones. Usually the sleeve makes it worse. It did in my case. I actually was on full liquids for 6 weeks after surgery because of it. I'm still taking a PPI, but at almost 10 months out, it seems to be improving. I sure hope so, especially after the new study that just came out about PPI's. I really would like to stop taking them someday....

I have heard of people for whom GERD gets better post-sleeve, but it definitely seems to be the more rare outcome. Typically speaking, GERD is worse in VSG patients post-op for at least the first few months to a year. Some people continue to have issues with it beyond that point. I, like Babbs, had my GERD get significantly worse post-op, so I've had to be on 40mg of omeprazole daily. I'm a little over nine months post-op.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
