Refulx, is this a problem

Recommended Posts

I went to a seminar about the Lapband procedure and the surgeon there said that one of the draw backs of the lapband procedure is the developement of reflux. Has anyone experienced that. I currently don't have it and don't want to start to experience it. Any information is appreicated. Thank you.

I think you'll find that a lot of people have reflux from time to time while banded. It's usually a sign that the band is too tight, that tissues are irritated, or something else is going on. It's a symptom of a problem that needs attention, not a routine result of being banded.

I had terrible reflux BEFORE my banding. It has completely gone away. Having said that, my doc does all fills under flouro and has said she's seen some reflux of the barium. She told me just to make sure I don't eat too much. There's times when I've taken one too many bites and I have a strange kind of "refluxing" sensation, but it doesn't burn like regular GERD.

After all that rambling, I guess what I'm trying to say is that, if you don't have it now, you should be fine as long as you follow the rules of bandster eating, and no pouch packing! :P

Thank you for your information. I do not have reflux right now and am hoping I don't have any problems. What is the hardest thing about getting used to the Band?

What is the hardest thing about getting used to the Band?

For me it's been changing my eating methods: chewing more, eating slower, smaller bites. I'm still not at a place where I don't have to think about this constantly while I'm eating, but that's ok. I knew this was still going to require some effort on my part. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair. Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end. That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
