Pain 5 days out from RNY

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Tuesday June 2nd I am having more pain today than I have since the first day after surgery. I haven't been taking pain pills because I can't sleep and they make me itch. I can handle the pain I just want to make sure it's nothing serious. I have been walking a lot. I still feel bloated and haven't had a BM since before surgery. (Sorry TMI, I know). Anybody else have these issues?

Yes, I'm in the same boat - except my surgery was only June 4. I don't have any solutions for you - I am taking pain med, using heating pad, drinking warm peppermint tea. If no BM in a few days, I may try Milk of Magnesia as others have suggested (after checking with my dr first of course). I found today to be better in some ways and worse in some ways than yesterday. (Of course then I passed a kidney stone this morning, so maybe some of the pain yesterday was from that. Great timing huh?)

Hang in there! At least that is what everyone keeps telling me!

My surgery was 6/1 and today I feel definitely "off". Not so much pain exactly, but I just don't feel right. Emotional, can't get my fluids in, feel just out of it. Hoping for all of us it passes and we can continue for a successful journey

I have talked about this all week as well. I had surgery on June 1 and have been in excruciating pain since then. Yesterday I had slight improvement, I no longer hurt whilst sittin still, only when moving. This morning is a bit more improvement, the pain has gone from a 9/10 to a 6/7. This is on track with everyone telling me it will get better in 5-7 days. Nothing has helped the pain except lots of walking which then causes me to pass gas. I had a BM on Thursday, my one and only since surgery, so Constipation may be an issue as well. Hang in there! We will get through this!

I had surgery 5/28 and it has taken a full week before I was relatively pain free, and then the coughing started, thought I would die, BUT it does get better. Yesterday was the first day I Had some energy. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you keep yourself hydrated above everything else. I was having a hard time getting liquids in and started to dehydrate, which then led to lack of Protein. Another member suggested I buy Fairlife milk, which will me liquid and is 13 grams versus regular milks 8 gram. Mix it with your Protein Shake and you easily get 30g of protein.

From my experience it takes about a week before you don't have any pain.

How is everyone feeling? The BM is no longer a problem. (Thanks to milk of magnesia). But the pain is worse on my left middle abdomin. It hurts to walk and hurts when I breathe. I get some relief when I lay flat in bed. I have no other symptoms (no nausea, vomiting, fever) although I have had a slight headache. Not sure what I should do for it... I'm ready to start feeling better.

I'm not feeling "pain", just sore there on the left side, but I was told by the doc to expect that. But no BM since before surgery....I'm moving gas, but that's it...should I be concerned? Even though I'm on full liquid, should I worry about Constipation?

Day 5 (surgery was on Thursday) and I am having a rougher day today than yesterday. I feel SO full just trying to get liquids in. The mid to upper left side pain was really uncomfortable and the pain med didn't rid it. I took a Zantac (hope that was ok) and it helped a lot and finally got on top of pain with pain med after sleeping through all night without. I have just been sitting here trying to count the blessings in the pain hoping that will help mentally - so I am grateful that I have the feeling of fullness because that means this IS going to work and is going to help me eat less long term. I am grateful that the feeling of being so full leaves me not craving or mourning any food. I am very grateful that I not only have I not vomited, I haven't really even had nausea. VERY grateful for all those going through this with me at the same time so we each know what to expect for the amazing veterans encouraging us that have already lived through this.

I am already a little panicked about being out of pain med and them not refilling. Trying to believe that by the time I get there in a day or 2, I won't need the pain med anymore. And desperately trying to get fluids in today. The only way I seem to be able to do that well is with ice chips. Not sure if that is a good solution or not....

I had my RNY surgery on Thursday the 28th of May and I actually felt great the first four post op days and THEN I went down hill for 3 days. I also had one heck of a time trying to get at least 48 oz of liquid and a min of 60 grams of Protein. I ended up beginning to dehydrate and was feeling so lethargic. I called my nutritionist and she told me to stop focusing on both liquids and Proteins and focus for 2 days on just rehydrating myself with Water. After the first day I started to feel a little better, but was still not where I thought I should be. A friend of mine who went through the surgery a few weeks before me recommended that I get some Fairlife Milk, you can find it just about anywhere, and drink a cup of that with one scoop of Protein powder and I would be 1/2 through the minimum Protein requirement and liquids. The milk is filtered differently and has 13g of protein versus 8 in regular milk and my Protein Powder is 25g giving me 38g. Dont get me wrong it takes me about an 1- 1 1/2 to drink it, but it is worth it. I mix it with sugar free strawberry flavoring and have a cup for Breakfast and a cup for dinner.

I am one week out today and I am still having horrible sharp pains in the lower left abdomin. It hurts so bad I still have to take pain pills. I talked to the nurse yesterday and she said it was normal.... Hopefully nothing is wrong. As for the BM, take milk of magnesia before you go to bed tonight. That got things moving for me.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
