Hello all!

I still have about 6 weeks until surgery but I am trying to get a list together of Vitamins, Protein Shakes, and other foods so I'll be ready when I get home from the hospital (stage 1)

I am confused about the vitamins and Protein powder (not getting great answers from my nutritionist)

Any advise would be great!

Tom

Thank u! Mine gave me a list and then cut it from about 30 different Proteins to three! (I think her preference) and Vitamins they want me to do chewable multi (flintstones), B12 1000mcg (once a week), Biotin 500 mcg, d3 4000 mcg (already been on), Probiotics >20 billion and magnesium, but I can't find all in chewable and she said no gummies

It's so confusing

Hi Tom! First, Good Luck to you for your surgery, you'll do great!

I am almost a month out from mine and doing much better than I ever expected :)

Ok, my nutritionist gave the advice not to buy too much ahead of time mainly for the fact that sometimes our tastes change after surgery...not sure why, but it happens sometimes.....that has not been so in my case however, thank goodness. Being OCD myself, I ignored this and stocked up...broths, Soups, NSA Popsicles, SF pudding and Jello, low sugar juices etc..and honestly I really didn't eat hardly any of it...the hunger just wasn't there, so I had to make myself eat several times a day.. At first don;t really worry about pushing to get in your Protein amounts, etc....it will get easier...just focus of staying hydrated, resting and healing. I found that each day for over week, i would hit this "wall: where I just had to nap before I passed out :) Listen to your own body...sip sip sip your liquids (and remember, Jello, broth and Popsicles count as liquids :) )

Now, protein powders...everyone has their faves so you kind of have to figure that out on your own. I bought mine from Walmart or Amazon...I just got one each of vanilla, chocolate and Unflavored..figured no matter what I added it to, one of those would work...the flavors so far are good (Six Star Pro Nutrition Whey Protein Elite Series in vanilla Cream, Body Fortress Super Advances whey isolate in Chocolate) The unflavored i got makes pretty much everything a little nasty..mostly an aftertaste so I need another kind (Now Sports Pea Protein...got on Amazon)

Same goes for Protein drinks (read made) trial and error...My fave is Boost...they make a Glucose Control one and i get it at the grocery store (Kroger) and I like both the vanilla and chocolate and they have 16 grams of protein. Atkins (Kroger also) is also pretty good with 15 grams and I have also tried Level Life (got at Walmart in the diabetic section) isn't too bad, a little aftertaste but doable, and has 15 grams of protein and only 1 gram of Sugar.....I was told our Protein Drinks should have less than 10 grams of sugar.

About the vitamins and such, I also bought them ahead of time, via Amazon...most of what I am required to take, i was taking anyway due to low levels, I just had to increase the amount the spread them out through the day...I take them in Gummy form, much easier. The requirements I was given was :

1- 500 mg Calcium Citrate with D3 3x a day

2- Adult Multivitamin 2x day (not within 2 hours of the Calcium to maximize absorption)

These are to be taken for the rest of your life, so find the best deal! :)

I have also been taking a hair, skin and nails supplement for years they told me to keep taking if I want, it has Biotin which is good for your hair, to keep it and help it grow.

They also gave a list that we may have to add later after our month check up:

1- 500 mcg per day of B12 (was taking for low levels but stopped just before surgery due to high levels, but they will check my levels next week)

2- 18-27 mg of Elemental Iron daily (this will back you up so take stool softeners {I was already on prescription Colace cause I take morphine daily} and Miralax has been a life saver {even liquid Magnesium Citrate in a pinch, it's cheap but may cause a little cramping but works in minutes})

Your docs should be monitoring all these levels over time anyway...it may take a while to get it all leveled out, but you will get there.I know it seems like so much info and so much to do but it will become easier and become second nature :)Good Luck!

I will be sleeved on June 15 and the items I have in the house:

GNC total lean French vanilla and chocolate powders. These can be mixed with Water or almond milk or regular milk. Each 8 oz serving has 25 grams of Protein and they really fill you up.

I also have Isopure Protein Water. It comes in different flavors and is 20 gr of protein for a 10 oz serving (half a bottle). I like to drink this in between meals over ice. Tastes like koolaide.

IsoNatural unflavored protein powder to mix with broths when I drink them. It is 28 gr per serving but I will just put a few teaspoons to up the protein value.

I also have several different broths. chicken noodle and several different types of soups/broths that I strain and just drink the broth with a little added protein powder.

Some very important things that I bought ahead of time were a strainer, food scale, proper measuring cups, and a food bullet to mix shakes.

One very important tip that I learned from my pcp who has had WLS is not to consume more than 20-30 gr of protein per hour. This is as much as the body can absorb and if you consume more it will be converted to glucose and you will be drinking a high protein glucose shake.

I will also get some electrolyte popcycles on the way home from the hospital.

As for supplements I take a liquid multivitamin and a liquid Calcium with Vitamin D3. I also have a liquid Iron ordered.

Good luck!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
