RNY - June 19th! Excited and scared all wrapped into one!

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am currently 44 but will be turning 45 the week of my surgery, (the 15th). My heaviest was about a week ago at 257. I don't have diabetes yet but I am on my way there if I don't do something about it now. I feel like a bit of a complainer because I do not weigh as much as most of the people that I see in the doctor's office and the meetings. However, I look at my 11 year old daughter and I know that I need to be there for her and teach her good habits; she is starting to pack on some additional pounds herself. I have tried several times to lose weight but just ended up packing on more pounds.

I just started my pre-op liver shrink diet yesterday. It is 3 weeks long and only allows me 1000 calories a day. Those 1000 calories come from 4 Meal Replacement shakes, a small piece of fruit, a 300 calorie or less frozen dinner a day. I thought it was going to be harder than it has been but again, this is only day two. I am sure my willpower will be tested.

Best wishes for a smooth and quick recovery and easy transition. I know about the excitement and nervousness. My bypass surgery is scheduled for June 16. Just started my 2 week Liquid Protein diet today. Looking forward to being on the other side of the surgery. Good luck to you.

Good luck to all of you guys! That pre op diet will set you up for success and although it is hard, it is so worth it in the end. After a couple of days you won't even be able to finish all the Protein shakes you are allowed to have.

I hope you all have a safe and speedy recovery!

Hey, I'm having my revision RNY on June 19th too! We'll have to keep in touch! I start my pre-op diet on Tuesday and am already dreading it. I guess I just have to keep the end goal in mind.

@cristina.banks , I am in a situation similar to you. Although I am considered very obese at 225 pounds, there are people at my surgeons office who clearly have a lot more weight to lose than I do. Did you have any difficulty getting your surgery approved through your insurance? I'm still terrified that I'm going to be denied. I'm afraid that they're going to say"you are not obese enough". I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and have been using a CPAP machine for a month now. My surgery is already scheduled for one month from today but I'm still in the preapproval process with my bariatric office.

I can completely understand being nervous about surgery. My is scheduled for June 26th (just 3 weeks away). I feel like I've been waiting forever. First saw my surgeon on July 31st last year and had to have a battery of tests and exams before I was approved. Found out I have sleep apnea but am hopeful that weight loss will correct it. I have already started my pre-surgery diet and am having trouble getting enough Protein so I've decided to try powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein products.

I wish all those who will be having surgery this month the very best success. Good Luck

June 16th here -- and I feel like I'm lucky, because my pre-op diet is just high Protein, low carb. Hasn't been too bad, though I miss eating fruit!

@@SHRINKING LINDA - I have chocolate unjury and i like it - not too much of a Protein shake-y after taste.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
