I'm about ten days past op and experiencing major reflux symptoms. Whenever I try to eat (I'm on puréed) or drink anything I'm in pain afterwards. It's to the point where I'm just throwing up any food I try to eat now. My doc didn't prescribe anything for reflux and he is out of town until 6/9 so they are little to no help. Any suggestions?

My daughter has this issue as well. Like you it is pretty serious and eating proves to be a miserable experiance. After trial and error the best action for her is to take nexium first thing when she wakes up. She eats 1/2 hr after Nexium. Only needs to take one dose each day. This seems to be working but certainly she is hoping this won't be forever. .

  • My surgeon sent me home on nexium. He told me I have to take it every day for the first two months. Its a proton pump inhibitor which makes your body produce less stomach acids.

I take 2 Prilosec a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I was told to take them for 3 months. You can get the OTC ones... I think the generic Omeprazole is the same thing.

For me it got progressively better after the 3rd month and a daily intake of omeprazole

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
