hello. my name is marissa. and im new to all of this. i have been overweight all my life. i often look back and think. when did i start eating for comfort. or when did i just stop caring. my senior year of high school. i became paralyzed from the waist down. and after having surgery on my spine to repair the discs that had hit my nerve. i got by butt in gear. and lost almost 90 lbs. i felt great. things were turning around for me. my family life got horrible. and i made a big move from oregon to texas. it wasnt untill i was here in texas a year that i realized that i fell back into my old habbits.and i started working on trying to loose it again. then i found out i was pregnant. and had alot of complacations with it. and to add my spine injury i was on bedrest. so i gained alot during my pregnancy. my daughter is now two. and i loose and gain quite a bit. but i could never keep it off. i have been doing zumba (my daughter does it with me as a game) so i loose a little bit but my back has gotten worse. my current weight is twice as much as i was in high school. and my doctor said i would be a great person for the gastric bypass surgery. and that it would help my back to loose the weight. and keep it off. so talking to my family. they are compleatlly against it. most of them are saying its an easy way out and that i dont try hard enough to loose weight.

i dont know exactly what to think. i want to do this. so that with this and working out like i have been and eating better like i have been and acctually do better than i have been.. how did you all make your decision?

"most of them are saying its an easy way out and that i dont try hard enough to loose weight"

To the ones who are saying it's the easy way out , they are not well informed nor knowledgeable about weight loss surgery. It is certainly not the easy way out as you

are making a committment to have your life changed permanently. One doesn't have alot of their stomach removed (sleeve surgery) because, it's the easy way out !!! I say to you find people who will support you and be open minded.

Losing weight and gaining it back again (yo yo syndrome) is what made me have the sleeve surgery. You will be healthier and happier if you make the decision to have

surgery. Of course it is my opinion but, I want to emphasize that you and you alone

need to make the ultimate decision. I hope you are happy no matter what you decide to do !!!

You can attend a seminar sponsored by a bariatric surgeon (look for a Center of Excellence near you and/or ask your primary care doctor for a referral), read (there are lots of books available, The Big Book of Weight Loss Surgery was written by the founder of this site), and read posts on this site and ask questions.

There is a lot of information on the Internet (some more reliable than others), so you can find a lot of info online, including Youtube, just be careful when evaluating the accuracy of the info.

Edited: because autocorrect sucks.

@@MissRissa922, if you just google Roux En Y Bypass, you will find a wealth of information. If, after doing your research this is what you want, go for it. I have only told a couple close friends, my brother and of course my husband because I did not want to hear the negativity. Not even that I thought I might, I just didn't want to take that chance. I have done my research and feel this is the best bet for me, so I am doing it. I have also been overweight my entire life, have lost weight on diets and gained more back each time and I am just tired of it. I believe this is going to be a life changing opportunity for me and I am going to take it. By far.....NOT the easy way out!

You posted this in the Bypass forum but if you haven't yet met with a surgeon you may not be aware of the other options. The Sleeve (VSG) is a newer procedure that you will definitely want to consider. There are also other procedures but you will want to learn about the most common as you come to a decision.

Hello and welcome! I am really glad you are taking steps to learn more about weight loss surgery. It can definately save your life.

I am also glad to hear you are going to speak to your doctor about it. If not them call your insurance company and they can recommend a bariatric center of excellence. The first step is attending a semina and learning everything there is to know about your options, once you meet with the team, they will assess your health and work with you to determine the best surgery for you.

In terms of your family support, it is very clear they do not understand that obesity is a disease that needs to be treated medically for long term success. Most of us that have been through weight loss surgery have yo yo dieted for years only to gain it all back and then some.

I also have degenerative disc disease and completely understand your pain. In fact in less than two weeks I will be going through another fusion. This time my cervical spine will require a 3 level repair. I really wish I would have had this bypass allot sooner before I did all this damage to my spine.

I am 51 years old and have been over weight since I was 19 and morbidly obese since 1987. It really tore up my body.

Once you go through your seminar then it might help to better educate your family. At the end of the day, you need to do this for yourself.

You are very brave for taking the steps to get healthy.

I wish you all the best and if you want feel free to reach out.

I am just getting started as well. Someone I have met in this journey recommended "weight loss surgery for dummies" book. I just started reading it but I can already tell that it's very honest about the good and the bad. The people here are also very helpful with ANY questions. Even the ones you think are dumb. :) Good Luck with your decision.

I just had surgery monday the 18th and if this is the easy way out my god help those who choose the hard way!!!!! I can barely eat or drink and lack energy. I know all this will get better but when people say that this surgery changes EVERYTHING they most certainly are speaking the truth!

My doctor recommend the bypass. I've been looking at the other options as well but I think I might go with the bypass.

Good luck with your recovery mal0712.

Did your PCP recommend the bypass or your surgeon? I have found that most PCPs aren't as familiar with the options either and only know about the bypass. I would definitely explore the various options with your surgeon.

Either way I'd really look into statistics and what ur gut us telling u to do. If u have any issues with reflux I wouldn't waste time with the sleeve. I'm happy so far with my choice. My dad went from 475 lbs the day of his surgery 10 years ago to 230. And has maintained it! When they say it's work it's no joke. It feels like I am constantly trying to get fluids in.

I didn't involve my PCP with my decision to have WLS at all. I went directly to the surgeon, and only emailed my PCP's office aa needed for referrals.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
