7 weeks postop and not losing very much.

Recommended Posts

I'm 7 weeks out. My surgery was March 25th. I've lost 23 pounds so far. Those pounds came off in the first 3-4 weeks. I thought it would be so much more by now but hey atleast its 23 pounds lost and not gained. I've had zero complications so far. No nausea/vomiting. No dumping syndrome (unfortunately, I find it easy to eat sweets). I'm struggling with everything they've told me to do. I find it nearly impossible to take 30 minutes to eat a very small amount of food. I've tried to slow it down but its impossible to even enjoy at that slow of a pace. It's really just not that much food. I'm getting my liquids in. Probably not as much Protein as I should. I'm going to go back to focusing on my shakes. It's just really easy to ignore them and eat food instead. I'm not losing weight because I'm probably eating too many calories and not exercising. So if I don't lose more weight I'm the only one to blame. I'm worried I'll be the only GB patient that never loses more than 25 pounds. I've always struggled with food and that hasn't changed since surgery. It's still my problem but now I'm just limited to small quantities. I thought that would be my salvation. It's looking like its not doing the job. I'm going to have to step up to the plate and seriously work with my new tool to get these pounds off. I didn't think I would be so discouraged at week 7. How is it that so many people appear to be doing this program so well when we all have similar problems with food before surgery. It looks like everyone's food issues have disappeared but mine. I don't think there's an amount of therapy sessions that would ever do me any good. Any advice for a nonloser? :)

Wow sorry you're struggling. I'm 5 months post op &-have lost 100lbs. I would start by laying off the sweets. They make sugar free Cookies &-fudgesicles when you have a craving for sweets. EXERCISE!! Can't stress that enough. Walk 2 miles 3 days a week. Walk 1 mile in between days. Go to the gym & lift weights. It will increase your metabolism. I eat less than 1000 calories/day. Drink Protein Shakes for a Meal Replacement to jumpstart your diet. 25lbs is a good start. Try to do what the Doctors tell you to do. The hard part is behind you. You made a decision to change your life. Don't sabotage it by going back to bad eating habits. Eat small meals every 3 hours. Lean Protein & veggies. You can do this. Good Luck to you!

You clearly know what you need to do to get things moving in the right direction. You are the only one who can make it happen so get on it.

not to be mean but you knew what you were signing up for. Why would you self sabotage so early in the process? You know exactly why you are not losing more rapidly or maybe not at all in the last couple of weeks.

You may not be suffering any complications right now but give it a few weeks more of not enough Protein and too much sugar. You have to have enough Protein for the rest of your life or you will actually become malnourished. You will not heal, your hair will fall out and you will get sick.

By the way, you crave what you eat. If you were eating good Proteins and good carbs your body would want that type of food. Because you are eating too many carbs, your body will crave it and it becomes a vicious circle.

The first thing I would do is get the crap food out of my house. Then I would go back to the liquid Protein for a few days, then start the soft Proteins and good carbs like vegetables and some fruit.< /p>

Only you can make this happen. The reason the rest of us are doing better is because for the most part we followed the rules.

You can do this but you have to take the right steps. If you do that, the weight will come off faster and you will get healthy.

Sorry if my words seem harsh but your post seemed as if you needed a kick in the behind to get going.

It's time for you to make some serious changes to your habits if you really want to be successful.

Good luck!

Buy sugar free fruit cups & eat those when you want a snack. It's my snack of choice. Mix it up & get different ones. I think you know what to do. Your Nutritionist should have given you a meal plan for different stages. If not Google it. Lean Cuisines are the right amount of food for me. Just get the ones low in sugar. No more than 5 grams. I'm still losing 2 1/2lbs a week. I've got another 100 to lose. I'm excited about everything that is happening & you will be too. My body is changing, my health is getting better & yours will too

Easy is not part of the equation. We are, and always will be, faced with food everywhere we turn. You just have to buck up and take advantage of your tool. Get used to making good choices most of the time so that when the honeymoon is over it's a habit to choose lean Protein over sweets and to choose a walk over sitting in front of the tv or computer. Don't waste this opportunity to finally get it right.

A pep talk that I give myself daily...I give you permission to use it . ;-)

@@IndieDivaIN if you search for "3 week stall" you will come across lots of posts from so many that stalled at the same time. It's typical so don't worry, this isn't the end of the road for you.

Tomorrow will be 6 weeks for me. I revised from band to bypass. I lost the first 20lb in my first 3 weeks then nothing for 2 weeks. I kept up with the fluids which seems to be the hard part for everyone. Got my Protein in and the scale started moving again. ????????I'm not in a huge hurry to lose so much so fast but if it happens then great if not I'm ok with that too, just as long as I keep moving toward goal. I just need to figure out how to eat and get fluids. It seems that when I am trying to get calories in and get fluids in I tend to feel like crap. I'm not hungry at all.., so I try to schedule my meals and usually feel blah.. After eating. I have made it priority for the protein and fluids not so much on the calories for now. I see my Dr on 5/20 and will discuss the yuck feeling when I eat. Best of luck & keep your head up. The scale will start moving again!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
