New and need advice on pre-op weight loss

Recommended Posts

I am pretty new. I am pre-op and hoping to have RNY done in July. I have two more dietitian appointments and cannot really lose anymore weight. I have to be above 40 BMI at the end of the appointments or I will probably be denied because I don't have any co-morbidity. Has anyone else had this issue? If I followed the diet they gave me I would lose probably 20 pounds in three months (I lost 6 the first month) and I really want the surgery and feel it is my best option.

I am also curious about the liver cleansing diet before surgery. I think I will have the approval/denial before I start, but I know I can lose a bunch of weight on a liquid diet and I don't want to exclude myself from having bypass surgery. Any helpful hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Once you have the approval it should not matter but I would ask your nut or surgeon about this for sure.

The liver cleanse is pretty effective at dropping some additional weight leading up to your surgery date but it should not matter at that point. No one will be reporting your weight during that time. You are usually weighed the morning of surgery and the reality is, they pump you full of fluids for two days and you end up gaining back what you lost in the liver cleanse.

Most people don't know that and get upset but the good news is, that is all fluids and within a week or so all that weight will drop right back off again.

Good luck and feel free to reach out if you have questions.

I was told that the weight that the submit your approval at is the only weight that matters. I am at a 40 bmi and worried about the same thing. I wasn't required to lose weight before hand, but I was worried about pre-op diet so I asked.

I also did not have to lose any weight prior to my surgery. I am 4 days in the pre op diet now, your insurance is lol approved before you even begin the pre op diet. Everyone seems to have different pre op diets, on mine I am allowed high Protein low carb as long as I keep my calories between 800-900.

I am kind of worried about the same thing,

I had my very first consult with my surgeon a few months back, Had to get a psyc eval, Attend a pre-op class and all of that.. Now all im waiting to do is have my nurtional evaluation.

I am right on the borderline of 39-40 BMI, I'm worried when I go back in and they weigh me, What if my BMI falls under 40 because I as well- Have no co-morbidity? I would really hate to be denied for 1 point on the BMI.

Any suggestions? And then my surgeon said everyone is required to lose 15lbs on their own before surgery... This will drop my BMI way down, or does that not matter because my original weight is what counts? Someone help!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
