What is feeling full post sleeved feel like?

Recommended Posts

Hi I am new to the site and just got sleeved, I was banded 4 years ago. I am 8 days post op, I am having trouble understanding when my tummy is now full, I lost the full sensation that I knew, I don't really feel full any more like I used before, after more than 4 oz of food I feel pain and discomfort is this the new fullness sensation I should be waiting for?

Also I don't really feel hungry as I used too, I now know that I am hungry when I feel anxious, is it only me? Am I a weirdo?

I feel that I'm lost with this new tummy sensations so different than before

@@Brigiter

you are not a weirdo.

The pain and discomfort is telling you you are full. For me its when I get to the point of burping. that is a sign to stop eating. Your hunger will come back. Enjoy not feeling hunger at this time.

It will take time before you and your sleeve get to know each other better. There will be a lot of trial and error that will educate you what it does and does not like.

First, the feeling of fullness for me is different depending on what I eat. If I eat mostly Protein and stop before I'm truly full, I have a very happy, satisfied feeling. If I eat one bite more I have an overstuffed miserable feeling for about 30-45 minutes. If I eat any Pasta I get the latter feeling no matter what because it expands in my tiny sleeve.

Second, I had no hunger until between 5-6 months. Even now it isn't anything near what it was pre-op. I love it!

SO GLAD YOU ASKED THIS QUESTION!

Before I sleeved, one of my problems was that I never felt full to the point that it was uncomfortable. It was never a feeling of being stuffed or feeling sick, I just sort of felt like I had eaten a lot and stopped. I honed this skill by eating at way too many Chinese Buffets (LOL!).

Post sleeve, my experience is same as yours. I can eat, say 3 oz of Roast Beef sliced Deli meat, and 2 slices of 2% american cheese. At only 4 weeks post-op, I should actually feel uncomfortably full after eating that, but I don't. I can stop, and may have a feeling of a little unsettling in my tummy, but its not a pressure that makes me feel like I will throw up.

Also, immediately after being sleeved, I could drink no problem. Heck, I could down 8 oz of Premier Protein drink in under 15 secs. Probably only 6 or so back-to-back swallows to finish it off. No discomfort. I soon figured out that was not good - in general sense, no problems for me - so I backed it off a bit. I still do only the 6 swallows to get it down, but space them out with maybe 30 secs in between. Taking 4-5 minutes to finish it off.

At my 1 week post-op, I discussed this with my NUT. The advise was to force myself to take (at least) 30 mins to eat my lunch & dinner meals. Of course chewing well and not swallowing any big chunks.

My 4 week post-op is in two days, I hope to get more advice on this topic. I am finding myself to be able - with no pain, discomfort, or spit/throw up ... to eat 3 or 4 oz of Protein and maybe 1/4 cup of veggies for dinner. I had been told this was what a sleever should be eating at 3-mos or 6-mos post-op.

Interested to hear from other sleeves with this same 'When am I full?' dilemma.

Yes, feel same way here! I can eat a whole yogurt of 150g with no problem, and don't really feel fullness sensation I should be expecting or as it was before, I have no problems drinking liquids at all actually gulping it down is no problem for me... I even can tolerate eating my liquids Soups and at the same time drinking Water etc, I guess that will change with solids... My Dr. Is an expert over 700 sleeves if not I would be doubting my result, only sensation is discomfort when I push to eat more I stop due to get scared for my new tummy but not really because I need to stop or feel full!

I had the band for 4 years and that enlarged my pouch a bit maybe that's why, at this point I so hope afterwards I will be able to know this better... Had that my sleeve really works

Interesting question. Not sure of the context of 'how much oz of liquid food' might mean. Of course, no drinking until 30 mins after feeding. Altho, its a mystery as to how Soups and such with a liquid broth differ from drinking - maybe the stomach processes differently than pure liquid on top of food (water and the like).

Most of the VSG materials say that once converting thru stages of Clear Liquids - Full Liquids - Puree - Soft Foods over the course of 1-4 weeks (depending on your Program/Doc/Nut) at the point you reach soft foods only eat a few bites and should be full. Thats the part that gets me >>> has never been my situation. Unless - and its my theory - that some of us have so-called 'iron stomachs' pre-op and maybe that extends post-op and why folks like me/you don't have sever restriction and consume more than expected, if we choose to. Perhaps the body is actually full at the 1-2 bites point, but we can just keep going with no real discomfort.

I will be seeing my NUT tomorrow (Friday 5/15) and plan to ask about this situation. Will come back and post another reply to share what I was told.

Cheers!

For those of you that are very newly sleeved (still healing from surgery) you will likely not really feel full until you transition to solid food.

There is numbness from the nerves being cut, and also liquids will flow through reasonably quickly.

You will feel a big difference with solid food.

The way I know I am full is when I feel like the last bite I took is sort of sitting right below my collarbone and not moving. It's not a feeling of wanting to throw up or something being stuck, but I can just feel that I've reached capacity. As of today, I am just over six weeks out.

Discussion with my nutritionist concluded that some can eat quite a bit post-op, with no severe feeling of discomfort.

Suggestion was made to set a timer for 30 minutes and eat slowly and chew completely.

This approach controls the intake, but doesn't wait for the sleeve to provide a feeling of fullness.

I have the same issue. I feel a discomfort but i thought it was gas pains so I kept drinking/eating. Im low on Protein and liquids and need to consume more so sometimes I kinda fight through the feeling. I guess I shouldnt do that since theres a chance it can stretch my new sleeve. Im glad Im not the only one.

Same...if I eat too fast or too much my chest hurts. I eat about four or five bites and stop

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
