Let's talk about diabetes!

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about ten years after I think it actually started. Prior to surgery, I was on four diabetes meds and blood sugars kept rising. Finally, saw an endocrinologist who put me on slow acting insulin. This got my blood sugars down, but of course is hard on the system.

After bypass surgery, went home on no meds at all. This was great, but almost every day since surgery (almost three weeks) my waking blood sugars are rising. Have made an appointment with my Dr. but wanted to know if this has been true for any other diabetics who have had by-pass. I am hoping to avoid long term meds and hope that losing weight will help.

Thanks!

I have Type II diabetes. After surgery, it went into remission and I have been off my meds ever since. I am 2 years post-op RNY. After the operation, I take my fasting blood sugar readings about once per month. These are my readings over that period: 91, 83, 74, 77, 93, 79, 81, 84, 103, 76, 84, 74, 80, 86, 81.

Please be patient , John. it can take up to two years for long time Type II patients to get well clear of high blood sugars (so says my Doctor ). Keep exercising , loose more weight, keep exercising ....repeat, YOU WILL BEAT IT !!!!

Thanks everyone. Steve, good advice on patience. I know that being off the meds is great, but was concerned by the BG creep...

Good to see this topic, as a diabetic on two insulin's myself my motivation for this surgery is to get off the meds and hopefully go into full remission (fingers crossed).

The Optifast is helping me immensely to the point I have to be extra careful with my dosages as I've had 2 hypos since I started 7 days ago.

Good luck Pinkie! It was wonderful to get off meds but I will likely have to start a small amount of them again, until more weight comes off.

I just had bypass surgery on April 28, and was on metformin and long acting insulin prior to surgery. I stopped both on the day of surgery and have been watching my blood sugar level daily. My fasting has been in the 130-140 range each morning. I just added metformin back into my daily regimen, the surgeon said that patients that were previously on metformin usually have a better weight loss if they stay on it for awhile. I had to switch to the short release vs extended release but I'm hoping this will help bring my fasting levels lower and in time I will be able to wean off of it also.

Good luck to you!

Until my surgery 2 weeks ago have been on Metformin, Long lasting insulin and Glimy two times a day. Day 2 after surgery totally off all medication including insulin. What a big relief. I watch my sugar levels three times a day just to make sure all is fine. And it is.

Just a matter of time before you become medicine free.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
