Four days Post Op-Woke up Choking last night

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Newbie here, had my sleeve on Monday, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, and i've had a relatively complication free week so far, I'm able to keep down liquids just fine, and haven't felt the need to vomit or anything since the moment I woke up in the hospital.

However, last night, I woke up choking on, what i'm assuming was stomach acid twice last night, and just wanted to get some opinions before calling my doctor's emergency on call number.

Has anyone experienced this so close to surgery before? and, could the choking possibly have done anything to the staple line?

Thanks for the help!

Dan

I had surgery Tuesday, and woke first few days with acid churning and making me feel like something bad was gonna happen. My dr prescribed some meds for it, and it totally has helped. Good luck making yours go away..

It's acid reflux. Are you on antacids or a PPI? If not, you need to start. My surgeon requires his patients to be on a PPI for a mandatory minimum 2 months. If you are already taking something talk to your doc about changing the dose or switching PPIs.

Yes, i've been on Omeprazole 20mg since I was discharged

I had to take Maaloxx in addition to my Omeprazole for awhile. I've read about Many others having to go up to 40mg or switch to Nexium or Protonix. Stopping eating/drinking 2 hours before bedtime and/or sleeping with your head and upper body partly elevated can help too. I haven't need a PPI since about 3 months out, but I do take Rolaids occasionally (when I irritate my sleeve by eating crap and drinking alcohol) and have done a course of Omeprazole when I had to be on NSAIDS and then steroids for neck/spine issues.

Your doc should be able to make whatever adjustments to your Meds you need to help. Reflux is probably the most common side effect of VSG.

Ok, thanks for the tips, appreciate it. I have my post op follow up with my doc on Tuesday, so i'll probably talk to him about it then

My doctor has me on the Prilosec (Omeprazole) twice a day. It works like a charm.

It sounds like acid reflux. That happens to me too. I just make sure I don't eat at least one to two hours before I lay down.

Dan I can sympathize with you as I had a few of those nights myself. It is a scary thing to wake up to I assure you of this.... Watch how much time passes between your last food liquid consumption prior to laying down. Try to allow 2 hours for the tummy to empty before you lay down. Another thing I found is that I added aloe juice. It can be found at Walmart pharmacy or you can also find it in a supplemental pill form. Aloe has healing properties and to me seemed to help calm things down.

Hugs of support on your journey.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
