5 days post op can't do all liquid diet. Anyone else do okay on soft foods?

Recommended Posts

When I post on here, or any other site, I try t put things as the bible states " do unto others as you would HAVE them do unto you". What I mean is I wouldn't want someone to give me bad or unresearched advice, I would want them to give me the very best they could, with my WELL-BEING in mind. I guess that's why I went to a SURGEON for this surgery, trusting that his surgical team would also ensure I have the BEST program in place for me. If I follow it, I can rest assured that I will more than likely succeed FOREVER by following it.

On the same note, if I, personally, give out bad or unresearched advice, I could POTENTIALLY albeit INADVERTANTLY cause harm to someone. No, I can't/won't do it. First, I don't want to harm them. Second, I couldn't live with myself. Third, I don't want the LIABILITY of such action. No thanks. I "do as I'm told" by my surgical team. I paid them for this, because I was not able to do this on my own. NOW all of a sudden I CAN? HA HA HA HA HA!

Oh and I might add I didn't do the pre op diet liquid diet. I did just find and still lost 10 pounds.

I have heard of some people not having to do the pre-op liquid diet. It is primarily to shrink the liver, and some (especially lower BMI) don't have a fatty liver. I think the majority are required to do some form of pre-op liquid diet or a pre-op diet, to lose a certain amount of weight though. Your surgeon was probably pleased with the 10 lb loss.

@CanyonBaby This is my way of thinking also..." I 'do as I'm told' by my surgical team. I paid them for this, because I was not able to do this on my own." This is why I choose to follow my guidelines. It is definitely a choice though, and OP says she chooses not to. Not much others can do to change that it seems.

"Can't tolerate" means you can't keep something down, not you don't like it/it's gross/whatever.

You can tolerate the liquids. Try some other brands of Protein drinks, there are dozens of threads on suggestions.

Don't move ahead on your diet because you don't like something. You are stronger than than. You've got this, give yourself the best possible chance for success.

I ate a few purées at a week out, and cream soups! I know how you feel about not being able to tolerate liquids! It was awful, but important to us all! I realize that each person is different but we all had our tummies cut off... So just remember we are still healing! That first week I was still medicated and probably consumed more "soft food" than I did in my third week! I think when your fogginess wears off and you get back to your normal routine of things you will see the benefits of sticking to the plan, or at least close to it anyway!! Lol! ???? were all human!

Try other Protein Shake options. There are literally HUNDREDS available. You can even use unflavored Protein Powder and make your own flavors with sugar-free syrups and flavorings. I wasn't allowed any solid foods until 40 days post-op. The idea of eating bacon at 5 days is completely terrifying to me. You didn't have any ill consequences, thank God, but why would you continue to press your luck? Even if you feel you absolutely MUST move beyond liquids (which I don't buy), why not go for soft foods and purees. Why would you immediately jump to not only solid foods, but one of the more challenging solid foods, pork? I don't get it. Why have the surgery in the first place?

My only insight is this. If you aren't going to listen to the doctor/surgeon then why go to one? It's like when people go to the doctor they are given antibiotics and after 3 days they feel better so they stop taking the meds to save for later, only they don't realize that the infection is still not completely cured. Doctors give you instructions for a reason. Like I said I don't understand why go to a doctor if you don't trust them to know what's best for you under their care. Sorry had to rant alittle

Also you say you don't want to be miserable the "whole time". No one is asking you to be miserable the whole time, LOL. Maybe for a few weeks of liquids and even then it's only really when you are drinking them right?

You can do that. Anyone can be miserable for a short period of time for long term gain right? 15 mins a couple times a day for a couple of weeks? You've got this!

The human body is incredibly resilient and adaptive. Like others have said. there are many other brands of Protein Shakes to try. I too found Premier Protein to be gross. Part of this process is to change eating habits. I would recommend speaking with your nutritionist for other alternatives to use during the full liquid stage. No, it's not fun, but it's just a temporary phase to help with the healing of your tummy. There will always be people who went AMA and were "just fine". My other concern is that the bacon and egg you had only contains approximately half the Protein you would get in a Protein shake. 1 strip of bacon is about 6 gms and 1 large egg is 6 as well. You need protein to heal.

Take it or leave it here are two points.

1) The reason that EVERY doctor you know the ones that went to med school and specialized in this area provide guidance for a diet is to help you sleeve heal! Did you know that bread, meat can and do get caught in the healing staples of your new stomach and can cause ulcerations? It isn't about oh, I didn't get sick or throw up and mmmm, that sure tasted good. It can be days or weeks that pass as a fistula forms or a staple begins a leak. But let's toss aside science for a minute. How did you get over weight in the first place? Did you follow the rules of a healthy lifestyle? Likley not. Know that WLS is NOT a miracle cure for your weight. If you are already going to fall on old habits then you may just be setting yourself up for failure in the future. I suggest calling your NUT or doctor if you are as confident as you feel and telling them what you are doing and asking them for their opinion.

2) I alluded to this in the first point. WLS isn't magic. You have to work just as hard to keep the weight off once you hit goal. It is a tool and if you aren't already willing to follow basic rules for your HEALING process. What makes you think you won't skirt the rules all throughout?

You have been given very sound advice by many long time WLS experience people. You said it all happened so fast you didn't think about it. I'm sorry but if you put yourself through a MAJOR life changing surgery and didn't think it through that is a real issue. Time to do some soul searching on why you did this in the first place.

Good luck and seriously you do need to tell your doc or NUT at your follow-up I'd hate for them to be set up for a malpractice suit because you were non-compliant.

When healing it is important to think long and hard about what you eat. O full liquids, greek yogurt is included so that is fine. Once you get past that, things get a little dicey.

You will find that surgeons do the post op eating plans a little different because there is no proven "right" way to do it.

That being said there are a few things that are constant MOST of the time- the first week after surgery usually ranges between liquids and a very soft consistency (like a scrambled egg) depending on the surgeon. Progress from one stage to another is slow and as tolerated with the understanding that we all heal at different rates. I have not heard of one plan that allows bacon in the first week!

I would highly recommend talking with the nutritionist and the surgeon. I would also highly recommend not eating bacon so soon post-op. It is an unnecessary risk.

Hey! Had surgery On 4/28 with no real issues. Have the premier shakes and they are too strong and taste gross. Trying to do at least 1 a day but have been leaning to Greek yogurt. Took my time, no problems. This morning had 1 scrambled egg and a piece of well chewed bacon. Took 15 minutes to eat it. Feel so much better that I'm eating real food. Anyone else not tolerate the liquid stage? I wanna be successful but can't be miserable the whole time.

You CAN, you are just choosing not to. I hope your choices don't lead to complications.

Eating what you wanted when you wanted got you into this place of needing WLS. No reason to believe that eating what you want when you want will find you equally as successful in losing it, right? ;)

See my profile pic? It says "In order to change, you must be willing to be uncomfortable"

I see a lot of people on here who don't want to be uncomfortable.

IE "Shakes are YUCKY!"

Boo hoo.

How are you doing now? Any better? I'm sure negative comments aren't what you wanted to see from this post, but instead encouragement right?

So I'll give you some... You got this! It is so hard! But take it one day at a time! Just think about how good you will feel in a few months!!!! I promise you will! Good luck!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
