I'm new. Just joined but have been reading the forums for a little while now. I havent always been big. I use to play sports and be very active. At 19 i went through a very traumatic event and gained over 100 pounds in 3 months. Since then weight loss has been a major struggle. While pregnant with my daughter i lost about 50 pounds but after her birth and between now, I have gained another 100 pounds. Ive been working with the bariatric doctor and nutritionist for a year and on March 18, 2015 I finally had the sleeve done. I had lost 20 in the year of working to loose the weight. Week one I lost 11 pounds. Week 2, I lost 9 pounds. Week 3, I lost 7 pound. Week 4, I didnt lose. Week 5, I've lost 4pounds. Ive been taking pictures with my weekly weigh ins, but dont see a difference yet. I am walking 2to3 times a day for 15 minutes. Do 3 flights of stairs 6 times a day. I also am starting my resistant band training. My legs have been cramped for a week and some days my stomach feels like I've just had the surgery. My friends say I'm being too physical too fast. I am afraid if I stop, then I'll gain and not be able to get up and go again. I hope to find lots of others that I can relate to as right now I feel alone, but I continue to put a smile on my face and pretend everything is alright when I'm around my friends and family.

At one month, I was doing my Leslie Sansone's Walk Your Belly DVD in my living room.I have post-stroke balance issues and can't go outside running amuck by myself, but I could march, stomp, and speedwalk around the living room and up and down the stairs. Plus she works your arms, too, so that it is a full-body work-out by the time you are done.

My doctor limited me to five pound handweights until six weeks. Stairs and walking were and still are my "go-to" exercises when I don't feel like doing anything else. I would think that doing the stairs several times a day would be a great way to keep your metabolism going.

When my legs are cramping, it is usually due to low potasium. A banana and a good rub usually solve that problem in short time. Medically speaking, if this persists, ask your doctor about the possibility of a blood clot in your calf. That is not anything to fool around with. Right when I started regular cooked foods, Miss Tummy talked back a little. My biggest incision would hurt if I carried the laundry basket or changed the bedsheets or did too much housework. That problem resoved around the second month. Since then I have been able to exercise at will.

Stretching caused me more problems than any other exercise, so maybe you could hold off on the stretch bands for a couple of weeks - then try again. That's just my opinion based on my own experience. Hopefully you will find the balance that works for you.

That should be Walk Your Belly Off.

Sounds like you are doing great! Listen to your body and of course your bariatric team and remember that weight lost with the sleeve is gone for good! As long as you follow plan you will be fine, it's a new beginning don't worry about the past gains when you didn't have the sleeve as a tool. I've been told that after three months the weight loss speeds up and than slows down a bit at 6 months but you will lose with the sleeve for up to two or more years! Good luck!

I am new as well just ran across this forum. Had surgery on Tuesday and still wondering what I'm doing wrong, what I need to do? If I am doing anything right. The night after surgery I was throwing up something awful and crying in pain. Nurse decided to over Medicate me thinking just for me to rest well Bp shot up and I was turning into a red Tomato on my face. All I could see was the huge mistake I just took and my kiddos face asking me why I did this? After the third day I'm feeling somewhat better bp is still getting the best of me ( not as bad) and my face has the occasional flush look . Still think I need to stay of the meds and sticking to Tylenol hoping that will do the trick.

My biggest fear am I pushing to get get to much Protein in already. I have a timer set to try to drink 1oz every 15 or 2oz every 30? Today I added all my meds back in plus my Vitamins that's been tuff. Ugh feel like I'm already failing bc I'm so full I have no desire to eat. But I know drinking is very important. Any suggestions or any answers would be great.

Thank you for responding! I drink 2 to 2.5 Premier Protien shakes a day, on 5oz greek yogurt, and half a can of Soup. I'm getting between 36 to 48 oz of Water a day. I am taking a Multivitamin daily. I havent started solids and have been told to stay away from bananas. I've been positive before the surgery and 90% positive after. I do get sown at family and friend gatherings that surround food. I have tried to find ways to express this to them, but no luck getting them to understand. I'm now learning how to deal with emotions instead of shoving food down my throat. Never thought the emotion part would be difficult. Miss Mac, thank tou for menttioning the tummy talk back! Mine started doing that four days ago each time I wat my soup. It came out of nowhere. Is that normal? So far I'm so grateful I've been able to do this! I'm 1/3 down to my goal.

Conerned05, I didnt start foods until week 3. I did broth, Water and popcycles. They told me I could do more but I didnt feel ready to. I stopped my meds two weeks before surgery and haven't been back on them. I'm feel good without them and don't plan going back to them as each one has nasty side effects that I would get. Both the bariatric doctor and surgeon have both told me to not take pills yet, so I havent even taken advil. You may be having a reaction to the meds they have you on. While in the hospital they had me on morphin. It didnt take the pain away and I had a reaction of hives and itching. They wanted to keep me on the morphin and I told them no. That is something you might want to discuss with your doctor.

I think you are doing great so far! There's no reason not to be active unless your surgeon says son. As for the leg cramps, could be due to dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance. Are you getting enough Water in? Are you taking Calcium supplements? Depending on how much you are eating, you may not be getting in enough sodium or potassium. So if you do think you are getting enough water, the you should maybe ask your doctor or surgeon about blood tests to check your electrolyte levels.

Be sure and get rid of your Advil. I was told not to ever take NSAIDs after surgery. Some can eventually but my surgeon said absolutely no NSAIDs or steroids six weeks after surgery (it can interrupt healing and cause leaks).

My next appointment, the doctor will be sending me in for the blood work. Thank you Inner Surfer Girl for informing me about the NSAIDs! Does it label that on the headache bottles or do I google search for a list of them?

You can look on the labels or ask the pharmacist. My surgeon gave us a whole page listing common NSAIDs and steroids to avoid.

Thank you for thw suggestion! I asked the pharmacist. They were very helpful. I've had a headache all day that won't go away, so I ended up getting children's Tylenol liquid form. Hopefully it helps. I'll ask the surgeon if they have a list to avoid. I didn't get a packet on any of this or what to possibly expect. Trying to "wing" it the best I can.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
