Newly Sleeved as of yesterday- how did you know how much to eat?

Recommended Posts

It's officially done!

Day 1 was a little rough till I got rid of the gas then the only painful area were the 2 largest incisions and they aren't all that bad.

That being said, I was served Breakfast, lunch and dinner. All containing broth, Jello, tea,and crystal light. I had no idea how much to eat- I couldn't tell between the incisions, the pain from th gas or hunger/thirst. So I had only 3 spoons of broth, 2 of Jello and a few sips of crystals light. It took me 2 minutes to do that because I was so cautious.

So I'm wondering- how did you guys handle your first few meals and how much did you have?

I was told to shoot for 1 ounce per hour for the first day and to increase it slowly to a goal of 4 ounces per hour after I got home and then gradually increase to the 64 ounces per day. Doing it slowly is wise. Good luck and hope your recovery continues to go smoothly!

I guess you could call me "lucky"? Frankensleeve was so intolerant of food for the 1st month that I virtually ate nothing. The 1st 2 weeks, I ate maybe a tablespoon of food per day, drank lots of Crystal Light, and ate sugar free popsicles. Starting week 3, I ate less than 1 can of Cream of Mushroom Soup per day. And by the end of the month, I was eating 1/2 cup of food per meal (4 or 5 meals/day) - and continued to eat that amount per meal till the 6 month mark. Then things eased up and I was able to eat more kinds of food, but not much more volume.

liquids go in and go out, they don't sit in stomach at all. Refer to the barium swallow test, does anyone remember that crap just hanging out in the stomach? Liquids you should have no problem, drink away but don't chug, or you are gonna puke

I sipped when I could, but the first few days, I would sip and dry heave, sip and dry heave. It was hell. They kept me hooked up to fluids, and by day 3, I could sip a bit without the nausea. I spent 4 days in the hospital (I had A Fib, so they stuck me in the cardiac ward.) I didn't eat anything, aside from sucking on a sugar-free popsicle or 2. When I got home, a couple of teaspoons of cottage cheese or yogurt was the best I could do. Protein shakes were my main source of nourishment. I always think of it as a baby beginning to eat baby food. Their main source of nourishment is liquid--mother's milk or formula. As they get better eating, food begins to be the main source of nourishment. As long as you are getting in liquids and plenty of Protein Shakes these first few days, you are doing great.

My surgeon advised slow small sips so as not to put pressure on the staple line... I had no issues except one late night large gulp of Water which was painful for about 3 seconds and then was fine. But now a few weeks out, I can take large sips again.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
