25 year old seeking advice!

Recommended Posts

I was referred to a bariatric surgeon by my gynecologist, they sent me tons of paperwork-mostly insurance related and of course health related. I turned those in, they called a couple weeks later to schedule my first appointment for May 12th. They said I'd be there from 7AM-2PM. I'll be seeing a dietician, getting my psych evaluation, seeing the doctor, getting a sugar test done, lots of stuff going on.

My question is, will my 6 month supervised diet start from that date? Does anyone know what I can expect going forward? I have Anthem BCBS in Kentucky. I'm already nervous that I'll be denied since for the past 5 years I haven't been to the doctor once (no insurance at the time). I'm considered extremely obese, 360 pounds, 5'6. I'm hoping that my insurance company realizes I need this surgery as a tool to help save my life. I'm only 25 and have yet to truly live, my weight has ALWAYS held me back.

Any tips or words of encouragement for this stage of my journey?

I think you will have to have diet history.

I also didn't go to the doc because I had no insurance but I had tried two different times with a weigh loss clinic.

You might have to do a six month diet to show you are motivated to try losing weight.

I had BCBS of IL and I was approved at 270 with no comorbities and I'm 22.

My BMI is a 58

you may be pre-approved because your bmi is over a certain criteria... I had to have 6 months of documented weight loss. I have bcbs. Once every month for 6 months consecutively I had to go to my primary and get weighed in. I had to lose at least 1 pound a month. You may be able to skip that part since your bmi is over 50 but every plan is different. Talk to the insurance company. They'll be able to tell you.

Not every insurance requires weight history. I'm 26 a 53 and weigh 380 I didn't need to have weight history only 3 month diet surgery is scheduled june 10th usually the surgeons office should know right away what you need. I went in there automatically asking if I needed weight history cause I didn't have insurance since I was 18. It really depends on your insurance and surgeon

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
