Developing blood clots post surgery.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone this is my first time posting but I am greatful for all the helpful information and support. I was sleeved on 3/8/2013 ungortunately I develop a blood clot on portal vein is a one of the veins that is connect from my liver to my stomach that's how they explain it. They said is one of the risk of having this type of surgeries. They put me on blood thinners and taken off them once the blood clot was gone. On Easter sunday I had horrible pain I thought I had overeat but the pain did not get better went to the hospital and it turns out I have another blood clot this time is on my mesentric vein which is the vein that provides the blood flow to my intestines. This time they sent me to a blood specialist it's frustrating because all the test they are performing seem to indicate that my blood is normal so the doctors don't even now what to think of it. He basically said to me I am warfarin and levonox again and wants to see me in a month. Has anyone had any issues similar to this I am really scared and the pains are so horrible even to drink Water hurts any information you can give will help me cause dr. are no helping at all. :(

Yes the first blood clot was discover 5 days after surgery and the second blood clot was recently discovered. My surgery anniversary was on 3/8 so it's been two years. Sorry for the confusion but I am just not all there this day. I also haven't been sleeping well cause of pain.

I would ask what their long term plans are for you. Do thy plan to have you on blood thinners indefinitely? Also ask if increased exercise would help you. Sorry you are uncomfortable now, but once you are up to it I would want to have a discussion about long term prevention.

Yes we have but dr is doing more research on bariatric patients and blood clots. He is conflicted because all my blood work seems to indicate I don't have a clotting issue. That is the reason I decided to join this forum to get some advice and hopefully find others with similar complication. I was working out everyday but now it's hard to even keep up with my 3 year old.

Won't pretend to know but could it be that you have a slight allergy to the blood thinner ( or an ingredient ) ?

A Young lady in a support group spoke of her doctors that couldn't understand her clotting time and again ( on lungs) with no obvious reasons. They finally realized she was allergic to heparin.

I have heard of blood clots after surgery and that is why they tell you to walk as much as you can.

I had a horrible experience with my sleeve but it was not blood clots. A friend of mine had

shoulder pain for about four months. I am not able to lift weights, push, pull or tug but I walk

all of the time. That has helped me overcome a lot of post-op problems. When I went in for surgery

I had a thin abdominal wall that no one was aware of. Every incision I had from sleeve to prior

surgeries developed a tear. I had over 30 hernias and I had a strangulated bowel, perforations and

sorry, I hit enter to by mistake:

blockages. I had emergency surgery on a Sunday night and they had to put a mesh across my entire

abdominal wall. I was in the hospital a week, went home and they had to do another surgery four days

later. It was the most horrific pain I have ever been in. My advise to anyone is if you think

something is wrong and your Dr. is not giving you the answers you need find another Dr. Don't let

it go thinking it is normal or it will get better. Now that I am well and back to normal I don't

regret having the surgery. I feel like a new person, most of my weight is gone. I have 40 more lbs.

to lose and I will be at my goal. It is wonderful to buy pretty clothes and not have to buy from

the plus size catalogs.

It's been so long since your sleeve I would not necessarily think the clotting and your bariactric sleeve are related. Folks develop clot for a variety of reasons. Sometimes there is swelling in the tissues around these veins caused by some sort of disease process or sometimes a person may have a blood disorder that causes you to clot easier, making you more prone to clots. Birth control pills and estrogen can make the chance of this type of clot increase.

I guess what I am saying is, in my opinion, I would not rule out an issue with your prior sleeve, but it certainly wouldn't be the first place I'd look for causality. Did you have trouble before the clotting started? Any pain/clotting last year, or directly after your procedure?

These type of clots can be painful and I hope they resolve with medications and you are able to keep up with your little one. Don't be afraid to contact your doctor if the pain increases dramatically or you develop any other symptoms.

I am not a physician, so please speak to your doctor. If you are concerned, or worried about your diagnosis then it never hurts to get a second opinion.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
