Find a hobby! Keep busy, find something to DO. DOING interrupts food cravings. And get some sugar-free popsicles for those "I gotta have something NOW" moments! Good luck to you!

I'm 6 months out and I feel like my hunger has increased. However, I don't give in to it. It's scary though.

I felt the same way at six months out. I felt like I needed to eat all the time. I had to discipline myself and start to really watch the time. I also increased my Water intake. As others stated above,I try to keep myself busy. I hope it gets better.

Just some things to try

Make sure to have a serving of vegetables with your Protein. The Fiber will keep you full longer. If you have a craving its ok to satisfy it to get it out of the way. Find bariatric healthy sweet and salty Snacks... sugar free pudding with added Protein powder. Jerky etc.

Thank you for posting this. I was feeling so alone with this feeling. Trying to do do everything but eat. Actually having the worst of it at night. I'm up after the rest of the family finishing chores, taking care of the animals. I do handcrafts including crochet. I'll be interested in what others may suggest.

@B Autumn

I crochet, as well. I'm trying to focus on more challenging, but SMALL projects, so I can finish them in a reasonable amount of time. That way it doesn't get boring. I also sew, curtains mostly (did you know you can change the whole look of your house with new curtains?!), and I do calligraphy, quilting, and drawing. Always busy! Try a new craft, one that you will look forward to doing the minute you think about it!

I also make hair accessories, jewelry, glass fusing, glass engraving, ansd woodburned signs. Sometimes I draw, paint, or watercolor. I also dabble in clay. Sewing machines have scared since I broke my mother's machine when I was about four. I just started learning to sew a bit. You would think that aling with three special needs kids, a sick Mom, spouse and four companion animals wouls keep me from snacking. It's just gotten worse since Mom's cancer is not responding to treatment and my middle child is having mental health issues along with possible syrinx of her spine. Just feel myself slipping into those old patterns of comfort food. The more everything piles up the more lost my resolve is to better. What's really frustrating is in every other aspect of life I have control issues. The one thing I want to control us totally out of hand. Then the guilt cycle begins. Sorry to be whining just really frustrated with myself.

@B Autumn

Oh, I wish I could give you a hug, 'cuz I think you need one right now! Of course we care so much that when something goes out of our control, we seem not to be able to do anything about it. Then, because something NEEDS to be done, it comes out in a way that isn't necessarily healthy! Grazing. Snacking. Eating improperly. ALL of the above? Probably. For lots of us. You are NOT, as you have read above, ALONE!

So how do we go about dealing with this? Maybe an idea would be to schedule things out a bit. Have your day SOOOO scheduled, you have to immediately go from one task to another, with no time in between for snacking. Write the schedule down, if you have to. Maybe do this just during the times of day you find yourself reaching for food. Carry the schedule with you, so there is no excuse for deviation. When you get yourself trained to follow this schedule, you should find little, if any, time to eat mindlessly. If you have to eat something, have an array of legitimate Snacks on hand, and go for those first. But keep to the schedule, and have those snack times PLANNED. YOU are now training your mind AND tummy when to eat, when to be hungry. But you have to be diligent about staying on the schedule. Don't deviate from it. Immediately go on to the next task at hand.

And if you're a woman of faith, go ahead and have that conversation with the Lord, all day long, whenever you need extra support. He, too, is always with you! And you can call on Him at ANY time and He'll be there.

I sure hope this helps, I'm on YOUR team! Take care and have a good evening!

Thanks CanyonBaby. Some goid ideas. I think knowing that there are others hsving the same struggle helps. It seems like you're very alone with failure. With everyone having medical issues most days are scheduled to within the minute. It's the nught I really struggle with. Everyone but the animals sleeping. Have to go into the kitchen to let the dogs out. No other door to the yard. That's when ut happens. I try to do anything but eat and always seem to end up with something even if I'm washing dishes. The worst part is I see my failure. I just need to get through this darkness and fix myself. Thanks for letting me vent.

@B Autumn

I don't think of it as "failure", because to me failure means you have given up the fight. From what you have written, I don't get that you have given UP the fight, but maybe you are TIRED of the fight. Lots of things on your plate right now, for sure. How would we normally "clean" our plate? By eating one thing at a time, not the WHOLE plate! Everyday you chisel away at the things that seem will never go away, but they ARE! Things slowly improve, and time goes by. But remember one VERY important thing....God NEVER gives us more than we can handle, you just need to rely on Him more to help you, or even to take the task from you. But you have to 1. ASK! 2. LET HIM! He wants to help, but many times we take that task back, sometimes over and over again. Can't do that! TRUST Him to do it, and LET Him do it. You, of course, will have your part to do, and it may be very difficult, but you are NOT alone! All He wants is the best for us, He loves us, and wants us to lean on Him. He WANTS to help! LET HIM!!!! Write anytime, I'm here!

@@CanyonBaby - Sound advice and wisdom. I agree with what you've said in your comments. Good reminders for me, too, as today I'm finding myself just nibbling away at stuff (jerky mainly) even though I've eaten my lunch and am drinking my Water and have had/am having a Protein beverage. Trying to refocus my energy (what I have today anyway) to stop eating since I'm not physically hungry.

Thank you, @@reyes7472, for your original post! Today has been a challenge for me and your post is the first one I saw when I did a search on this topic.

We will win!!! We will get past this bump in the road!!!

WE CAN DO THIS!!!

Do you feel like you are overeating or is it just that your appetite has returned? If it's overeating/grazing then there are many good suggestion listed above. If it's just your old appetite waking back up, the maybe try several small meals instead of 3 big ones. Most days I am okay with breakfast/lunch/dinner, but there are days when I have to split that up into 3 meals/2 Snacks or just make room for an afternoon snack. Knowing I have this planned keeps me from going overboard.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
