Alcohol - effects and wait time

Recommended Posts

How long did you wait before you had any alcohol? Did the effects set in quicker? I am only two months out and I know I won't try any time soon. I'm just hoping I don't have to wait a year.

Thanks!

I waited a few months - maybe 5 or 6 months. I found that drinking an entire drink was out of the question. It took too long to drink it all and I got bored with it. So now if I want something to drink it has to be a shot. Right away I discovered that the alcohol hit immediately. I could feel it go down and it felt like it spread over my whole body , stomach first then outward from there. Woweee....it was intense.

Now I rarely drink but I can manage a shot then one more a little later. After that I throw in the towel. You can drink something just be real careful on the quantity and time frame. It sneaks up quick.

I think I was around 4 months the first time I tried it? What I noticed is that I get drunk very quickly on very little, but I also sober up very quickly.

Yeah if I drink I do shots.. mainly cause it has no extra carbs like the mix drinks (my logic is crazy I know) but you do have to be very carful cause it will creep up on you!

I waited about 5 months. Alcohol does hit faster simply because the tummy is so small that there's rarely food in it.

So that makes me a cheap date. Of course, I'm a guy and we're mostly cheap dates. ;)

Most everything you eat/drink is "as tolerated" unless directed otherwise by your physician.

I waited until 3 months out and I only drink vodka with diet cranberry juice. I can drink one or two and I really don't feel any different than before surgery with how it affects me. I only drink once a week at the most. I do enjoy it though!!

I've drank once since surgery but I'm only a few months out. It was a couple of weeks ago and I had some vodka mixed with my Vitamin zero Water. I had a couple drinks and didn't even get buzzed. I was probably really light on the vodka because I was worried how I would react but it was no biggie.

I waited about 3 months. I only have a couple of drinks when I do drink. I have found that vodka and Water and a splash of cranberry works for me. If I drink I absolutely do not try and eat too. I eat about an hour ahead of time.

Had wine at 4 months. Tried a Bloody Mary at 5 months but it burned...switched to a mint julip (I was at a Kentucky Derby party). Couple Vodka cocktails at a gold tournament 6 months out. Didn't get too carried away with drinking until I went on vacation 10 months out. (When I was already well below goal weight). Unfortunately alcohol doesn't affect me any differently....I can still out drink a football team. But if I drink more than 2 days in a row I get bad gastritis.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
