Biggest surprise/regrets after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm with @@alwaysvegas - not a single regret except that I didn't do this sooner. I had a pretty easy surgical experience and continue to have an easy time of it post op. I had no pain/nausea/etc..., not even gas. Even with my food allergies I've had no issues with food. I can still tolerate plain Water. I still have to work at it by eating right and exercising, but I pretty much eat everything I ate pre-op.

My biggest surprise has been how uncomfortable everyone's comments make me feel. I saw someone yesterday that I hadn't seen in a while and it was just uncomfortable with all of their comments...

I am 12 days post op and my biggest surprise is how easy the recovery has been for me. I had very little gas pains and no pain after I left the hospital. I have been on pureed foods for a few days and it feels so good to be able to have something other than a Protein shake. I am still learning to slow down when I eat or drink. If I go too fast, I will know it. I may have to try counting or something in between to remind myself I need to take my time.

Regrets? None that I can think of right now. I will say that this is not for the faint. You really have to be all in to go through the meal plan stages. I'm a picky eater so it's really hard but tuna has a lot of Protein in it. I try to stick with things that are most beneficial to my healing and my health.

I would have to say that my biggest surprise would have to be my recovery. Short of one day where I tried a new shake and it didn't agree with me. my recovery went way smoother and easier than I thought it would. I am such a big baby when it comes to be being uncomfortable or in pain. Even my family was surprised at how well I did. YEAH ME!! LOL

My biggest regret would definitely be not doing it sooner. I had gone to a WLS about 5 years ago and ran out of it early thinking this is not for me, I don't need this. Now knowing what I know now, I really really wish I had stayed and did it then. But hey better now than never.

the biggest surprise so far for me is how quickly I healed and also the heart burn. Thank God for prilosec. I have yet to experiance regrets. I have wanted this more than anything. The hardest part for me right now is eating. I am like a baby learning how to eat again. I dont want food but i do at the same time. Love/hate relationship with food. I love watching people eat food....lol

No regrets really. I didn't like the emotional aspect at all. What a rude awakening that was. But you get through it and move on. I do get annoyed at my inability to eat sometimes. Like yesterday. I cooked for hours and tried to keep the sampling to a minimum but I could still only eat about 6 bites before I was full. Oh well. I walked out my door this morning NOT being a larda** so it's ok.

@@Quest4TheNewMe What comments made you uncomfortable?

Sorry, I don't know how to tag you from my phone. :)

It was a family friend who has kids my age and he was saying things like:

"Where'd you leave the other half of you?"

"Day-um!!!" (damn)

"You look GOOD!"

"You look amazing!!"

I also had one of the male Directors at work come into my office and ask "what's with the transformation", that he saw me and wasn't even sure that it was me. That I don't look anything like I did before. He just kept going on and on.

I weigh right now what I did when I was 15 yrs old. I have lost almost 100 lbs. I get that it's significant and that I look good, but I wish people could just comment that I'm looking good and leave it at that. I'm tired of the continual comments and need to ask me a bunch of questions. Or the people that I see frequently that feel the need to comment every time. And those who ask how much I've lost (she's just catty and competitive). I'm just over it and ready for people to move on.

@@Quest4TheNewMe I'm sorry. I understand what you mean. American culture nowadays is so much TMI, so much everything out there, that it makes it hard for people to simply want to get on with their lives.

I'm a week out tomorrow. I feel great most of the time and am itching to drive and go back to work but because I am incapable of drinking (makes me feel like I fail) I am out until at least Monday. I can hopefully drive before then once I get off the last two doses of pain med.

Make sure you are a liquid drinker. Honestly my only regret is that this step is SOOOO hard.

My biggest surprise was how easy it all was. I read so many posts about emotions, cheating on the preop and postop diets, nausea, pain, stalls, Constipation, diarrhea, depression, GERD, food intolerances, body image issues, loose skin, etc. I was expecting the worst, but turned out I worried for nothing. I had a fairly easy, pain free recovery and no problems following dietary restrictions. I never got emotional (other than happiness) and luckily had no serious complications. Even though I experienced some of the other things (diarrhea, then constipation, food intolerances, loose skin, and stalls) none of them were as bad as so many posters on here made it sound. I think a good attitude and realistic expectations makes a huge difference in your WLS experience.

Postop life has not been any harder than so many of the diets I've been on in the past but this time I've gotten much better and more permanent results. At 15 months out and maintaining well below goal, I honestly think this really was the "easy way" to lose weight and have never had one minute of regret.

I am almost 6 months out. No regrets, NONE! Even though I can no longer eat the way I used to that does not upset me. I am healthier, happier, and know I can do all of the things I have not been able to do before the surgery. Surprises: how sensitive my reaction to smell has gotten. The smell of anything deep fried gets to me, the same with sweet smells. Surprised at the looks I get now, it is no longer the "that guy is fat" look. I have also been told by the wife that she has caught women checking me out (says it turns her on). Surprised at the overwhelming support that is out there not just on these forms but in general, my circle is way supportive of me and helps hold me accountable. Biggest surprise is I have lost over 100lbs in 5 months, off all pain and blood-pressure medications and feel amazing. My energy is through the roof I workout multiple times a week both cardio and weight-lifting, I am starting to see definition in my muscles. Where I have always been a very strong big guy, I would get big but not cut, now I am getting both. I lost a lot of strength before, but, even with the calorie deficit my strength is coming back very quickly.

Good luck with your journey, it will not be easy, but it will be worth it!

Kindle, I love your positive post so much. I am 8 days out from surgery and feel amazing with little to no incision pain, have been active (legally) and am finding this phase of the post-op diet manageable. I also think that down the road my food restrictions, amounts, etc. will be no different than one of the diets I have tried - good point you made.

I am so looking forward to the day when I can say I have reach goal. However, my first goal is ONEDERLAND which is not far off! Thanks again for your encouraging post.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
