2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea

Recommended Posts

Omg I can't believe everything she is going through. These doctors always blame it on the patient when it doesn't go textbook. They always act like they have never seen anything before just because their tests come back normal they assume nothing is wrong. Dont let them give up on her just because her tests are coming back normal obviously something is wrong. My doctor tried doing that with my other surgery I had surgery on my gallbladder and all the pain was in my left side. They kept saying nothing was wrong but I was fine before they touched me. Anyways i am scheduled 1week from today but I can't help but think about your daughter and what she is going through. It is scary..I will continue to pray for her hopefully they can take the stone soon and maybe she will get better after that.

@@newbeginning77 Thank you! I hope yours goes more smoothly! It's true what she's going through is rare but it DOES happen. Just because they don't know why doesn't mean they shouldn't try to figure out just exactly what is going on. I get more and more disgusted with the medical field.

The Bariatric Surgeon has now consulted a GI Specialist, who is going to do a scope tomorrow. He said he doesn't expect that anything will come from it but he wants to rule everything out to be certain. So, another procedure and we'll see what happens next.

That stone needs to come out. My money is on the stone. LOL

So they haven't said when they'll take the stone out yet?

@@RNYGal He initially said two weeks from the first time he tried. So...next Friday.

They did an upper GI scope today and everything looks good with the sleeve and esophagus so they've ruled out any issues with that. They want her to talk to a psychologist now. Seriously? I highly doubt this is psychosomatic. But hey, we'll play their game and she can talk to psych. He wants to "rule out any psychological causes."

How the hell is nausea and vomiting psychological? The crap they're coming up with now... She still in the hospital or were you guys able to go home?

We're still in the hospital. She's taking Protonix IV for antacid. They started her on IV antibiotics for UTI and then today he said he wanted to change to a stronger antibiotic because they found e-coli. WTF? The new antibiotic is oral and it makes her vomit of course.

Well no wonder she's been nauseas and vomiting! Maybe they finally figured out why she's been so nauseas. E-coli is horrible to have and can make you sick for weeks! And they're idiots for giving her an oral antibiotic when she can't keep anything down. I'd get that switched asap. Poor girl has been thru enough without having to worry about getting sick even more from a pill.

It makes no sense to give her an oral antibiotic. If she's still vomiting shes likely not getting enough of the antibiotic to do any good. She needs IV antibiotics.

@@BLERDgirl according to the doctor, she had some antibiotic resistant e-coli in her urine and an apparent UTI or Kidney infection that also might be resistant so this is the only antibiotic they can use and it doesn't come in IV. I find it hard to believe there isn't and IV medication for this.

That is horrible! I have heard of meds that come in only one form. Crazy but true. So sorry you guys are going through all this.

I've been on a special project for work so not able to be on much this week. I was so hoping to read good news- and I'm so sorry that things have not improved. Is she able to eat anything at all? What are they doing about nutrition? And how are you holding up?

@@samuelsmom thanks for checking in :) No, she's not able to eat anything at all. She still can't keep down any liquids. They are probably putting in a PICC line today to start getting nutrients in through IV. They had a psychologist come to talk to her and teach her how to take deep breaths if she starts feeling anxious. She's still vomiting (violent dry heaving really) several times a day.

I'm hanging in there. Luckily i'm able to work from the hospital so that takes my mind off of things and I'm not losing pay and in turn, my job. That's all a single mom needs! Last night I posted on Facebook how nice this "All-Inclusive Resort" is in Austin. They have room service, valet parking, round the clock care and even daily housekeeping. It's like a vacation. Ha! Not. Oh well, trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

@@ssourgirl - I know you guys are frustrated but please listen and practice the deep breathing the psychologist is talking about. I was a Child Life Specialist for many years and assisted is procedures often. If you can control your anxiety level it actually makes things a lot better. I helped children as young as 5 get through suturing and even lumbar punctures (spinal tap) by staying calm and deep breathing. On a personal level, I have to get frequent MRI's due to a tumor I have. Being encased for 1 -2 hours while the machine bangs and clicks AND you are unable to move can be extremely challenging. Often people request a sedative to get through it. I used deep breathing to relax and get through it. It's sounds like such a simple thing, but it really does work.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
