Happy to Mentor - Almost 1 Year Post-Op

I will be one year out at the end of April. I live in San Jose (Bay Area) and had my surgery at Kaiser South San Francisco. I am willing to help answer questions or listen to anyone if they need to chat/talk. I am 35, married, no kids, right now down 98 pounds and still going.

I was sleeved 3/25. I'm going through boredom in the couch. Every time I see food I want it I'm sick of shakes I am having hard time with Water too I barely walk two blocks and I'm tired. My throat hurts. I'm wondering what did I do to myself.

It will get better! I was in and out of it the first week after surgery but after the first week things were a LOT better. I kind of had the same feeling of, "OMG what did I just do to myself and WHY?" But deep down I knew I did the right thing for health and for myself in general. I was tired after walking short distances but it's just because our bodies went through a lot and still need time to process everything. That will get better with time, just keep walking however long you can. Don't overdo it though.

I personally had to stop drinking the shakes because I could no longer handle sweets after my surgery and the shakes made me gag something fierce! My doctor told me to discontinue them. Have you tried doing the unflavored Protein powder? You can put it in anything and you are still getting your Protein in.

As for the Water, take it slow. I was told in my classes to take a sip every 10-15 minutes. Just a sip. Doing that throughout the day should get you the water you need.

Hi! My sleeve is scheduled for 4/23 & I'm getting super nervous about the puree stage. I do feel prepared -at all-. I have read and watched so many videos. Any support that can be offered, recipes, suggestions... (p.s. I don't like eggs or cottage cheese). Thank you! :)

Hi OrangeAwareness. I would refrain from watching some of the you-tube videos. There seem to be a lot of negative ones out there and they could end up leaving you feeling discouraged. If you do watch some of the videos make sure they are ones that are positive.

While each person has the same journey we don't all feel/taste/whatever the same after surgery. It will definitely change your life. I know it changed mine in a wonderful way.

Some easy things to eat (more of a grab and go) would be:

Danon light and fit yogurt mixed with a tiny bit of fruit. (I mix vanilla yogurt with cottage cheese and add fruit. you can't taste the cottage cheese at all, just the yogurt. It's high in protein)

Boca burgers are pretty soft and I like to melt a piece of cheese over the top of it

I like the already mixed tuna packets (the deli style ones)

cheese sticks/string cheese

unsweetened applesauce

Right after surgery I really liked this potato leek Soup my mom made and pureed for me. It was thick and I froze it in an ice cube tray so I could just pop one out and heat that up and eat it. I unfortunately don't have the recipe but I am sure you could find one online. I also choked down Protein drinks (I haven't been able to do sweets since surgery) but they proved WAY too sweet for me. I also ate sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding.

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful suggestions! I've tried sticking with the positive YouTube videos & even some that aren't so positive so that I can be better prepared. I'm concerned about the puree stage bc I'm so picky. For instance I don't eat eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, any seafood...yeah, I know, I'm in for a challenge! Knowing that the surgery will be a tool to living a healthier lifestyle is certainly my driving force. Finding high Protein puree foods will be my dilema.

Desperately need somebody who understands.

Had my sleeve 14th April 2015. 5 days latter collapsed with a major wound infection. Was back in high dependency for 4days. Just home but Sooooo nauseous from the 6 different antibiotics 3 x daily that I can't tolerate food or fluids!

I'm so thirsty, weak, tired...

Stupid me, Stupid sleeve, Stupid infection ????

I feel like death.

EJS ~ I am so sorry that you've been through so much. Has your doctor considered re-admitting you so they can gv the meds and fluids through an IV until you are over this hurdle?

My sleeve was on the 23rd in Cincinnati, Oh and I was admitted back to the hospital within less than 24 hours from my surgery d/t vomitting bile & blood. The nausea has been so bad. Today I finally feel a smidge better.

You're in my thoughts and prayers.

My Gawd, I sure hope so! I keep reminding myself why I felt surgery was the best option....this of course is while I currently remain sitting in the hospital room. They gave me the 1 ounce pill containers to sip from. Two per hour should take us leaps and bounds...so I've been told. Bottoms up my friend!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
