Hi All!

I've been lurking for almost a year and still don't know what to do. I'm a Mom of 4 oldest 11 youngest almost 2 and i'm FAT!! lol No surprise there then!

I went for a consultation at the begining of the year and although I didn't meet the actual Dr (he had been called to an emergency) I did meet a nice Dr who said I could have lapband but thought I should give health and fitness a try again, she made me all sorts of promises of help and support including a lowcost personal trainer to come to my home three times a week. Well she never followed up.... I came out all fired up but I didn't hear from her again. So here I am fatter than ever as miserable about it as ever and wondering what to do next!

I have only managed to lose 31lbs in the past (three times) and then I put it all and more back on. I lack the willpower to resist once I get a few lbs off as I am feeling better about myself and clothes are not looking soo bad.

So if you have got this far have you any advice for me??

Thanks in advance.

Gilly.

5'7" approx 245lbs.

To UK Mommy,

Looks like we have some similarities in our backgrounds. I lurked for awhile (thanks folks, for letting me look over your shoulders) and recently joined because I was given a surgery date of June 13. I've been attending the classes, and required appointments since January, and when my insurance said ok, they set the date.

It must be an awful feeling to have the doctors profess great interst in you, and then you never hear from them again. One factor in my choice of clinics and programs was just how much I felt I could trust the people to be really interested in my case, not just my money. I went to a few different places and meetings before I made my choice. And I have to travel quite a distance to the clinic (70 miles) when there are places closer to my home. I've chosen Northwestern Memorial Wellness Institute in Chicago, and my surgeon will be Dr. Hungness. (Anyone have any horror stories, get them in quick, I have one week left to change my mind!)

I'm 58 and have tried to lose weight the "health and fitness" way for at least 15 years. I can lose 30 lbs and then gain it right back. My choice to go the lapband route was made because I have the "attendent morbidity factors" of high BP, reflux, and sleep apnea. I want to get healthy!! I'm 5'6" and 235lbs. We have four adult children and I want to be able to run after my grandchildren.

I have to admit that now they have scheduled a date, I'm getting nervous. Glad this forum is around so I can jump from topic to topic and get lots of points of view.

Any advice? I'd say keep trying. To paraphrase my son, "the only thing worse than losing weight is not losing weight".

Cheers!

ML

Thanks for the reply.... that was the problem she didn't want my money so I was really keen to see if I could 'do' it this time, shame she didn't call, as it sent me backwards.

Good Luck for the 13th! I have to start over so I am looking at my options!

Gilly

Hi UKmommy,

I am new to the site but lurked for a few weeks. I have been researching the surgery for awhile and found this site to be very helpful. I will be attending a free seminar this Thursday and getting the ball rolling. I have done some of the leg work already by finding out if my insurance will cover the surgery and if my Primary doctor will give me a referral. So far so good.

I hope your journey the 2nd time around is more successful and you find a facility that you are comfortable with. That makes all the difference when you are making a life changing decision.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
