Craving pickles!

Recommended Posts

I am 11 days post RNY. I know that I am mildly dehydrated but I'm having difficulty with getting my fluids. I am craving salt, specifically pickles. I have put a slice in my mouth and just sucked the juice off and spit the pickle out. I know this probably isn't very good for my healing pouch, but I am seriously in need of salt.

If the worst thing you do is suck on a pickle (there's a joke there, but I'll pass for now), you're doing great. Try do drink more fluids, salt will only make you thirstier and that's going to make you want more so it's all good.

Ok, I might be way off here, so take this for what it's worth, BUT when I am dehydrated (this is pre-surgery, I haven't had mine yet), I actually drink some pickle juice. Runners use it too. The theory behind it is the electrolytes in the salt (I think), SO having said that, how about drinking some Powerade Zero? It doesn't have any calories but does have electrolytes. I might help with the dehydration and the salt craving. You might check with your nutrionist if you aren't sure if that is something you can drink but just a thought.

I did the same thing with the pickles. I had a hard time with dehydration the first month. I chewed on crushed ice and went through boxes of sugar free popsickles. Warm peppermint tea also....

I am six weeks post op and I also have been craving pickles. I don't want the regular kind, I want spicy!! I never liked spicy food before, but now I want spicy in my chili, my tuna salad sandwiches and pickles. Yummy!

I just had my surgery about 10 days ago and I have kind of been craving pickles as well. I've always loved pickles and in the past would just sit and eat them straight out of the jar. So I thought maybe it was just my pickle obsession. I don't know now??

I am 13 wks. post op and I am still craving salt. In the beginning I would lick the salt off pretzels and then throw the pretzel out. Now not only am I still craving salt, I crave pickles also. There must be something in all the pickle "mess" that our bodies want. I now have pickles very often with my lunch. At least we know that we can't all be nuts.

After surgery your taste buds change. I found that I no longer liked to drink Water. I transitioned over to using Crystal Light to give the Water some flavor. One of the individuals in our Bariatric Support Group was a sports trainer. He recommended using Gatorade G2 which is a low calorie drink. It restores electrolytes.

I make my own pickles and eat tons of them each day. I just use salt, vinegar, splenda and little celery seed. That's it and they are SO good and they keep me busy eating. Love them! If anyone wants the exact recipe, let me know.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
