How long did your hair fall out?

Recommended Posts

Yes, knowing what to expect DEFINATELY helps. I tried to prep for it by beginning to take the Biotin like three months before my surgery. I increased the dosage post op. Haven't experienced it yet. Thank God, and I pray I do not. Thanks for sharing all the info. Really helps to have a plan, if necessary. Have a great day.

I'm almost 15 weeks post op (Nov 2014 sleeve) and my hair is definitely falling out. Not in clumps, but so thin I feel like I'm washing my scalp vs. my hair. I don't see anything that looks like new Hair growth, so I'm hoping it slows down at some point before I'm bald! I've switched to an oil based Shampoo and I'm definitely taking all the Vitamins recommended to minimize Hair loss. I have my fingers crossed, but I also knew it was a possible consequence of rapid weight loss.

@@jenn1 Is it a lot or just a little at a time? I haven't had any clumps yet just multi stands.

@@Elode

I have to clean my hairbrush after each use. It's not clumps but a small palm full after cleaning my hairbrush. The part down the middle of my hair is where I notice it the most. My hair is so thin. Glad the Hair loss is temporary. I'm trying all kinds of things. Hair extensions, Topix , biotine, shampoos and hair regrowth serums. Nothing working . I'm just having fun with it at this point. LOL when I wear extensions they are 22 inch long one's. Go big or go home..lol

Thanks for starting this conversation! I was thinking of starting one on this topic today because this morning while shampooing and conditioning my hair in the shower, my hair started coming out in chunks. Really freaked me out! I knew to expect some Hair loss following surgery, and have been losing hair along the way, but never in clumps like today. My surgery was 11/10/14 and I've lost about 52 lbs. I get at least 75 grams of Protein a day and I'm taking Biotin. After my surgery, and the complications that followed which put me back in the hospital for another 19 days, I came home on Coumadin. Just this morning I read where it can cause hair loss as well. Sure glad I have a thick head of hair if it's going to be coming out in clumps for awhile. Sure hope it doesn't last months and months!!!

So far, I only heard one person chime in about it growing back, and that was after two years! I'm in the same place as Elode and I'd love to hear from more people about when the loss stopped and actually reversed back to normal.

Anybody?

I started losing a LOT around 3.5 months out. I am now almost 6 months out and it has slowed considerably and I have a LOT of new growth. The new growth is a little ragged looking (looks like broken pieces and fly aways), but I'm happy it's coming back. I suspect than in a few months, if I cut my hair short one last time to get it all the same length, it will be impossible to tell I ever lost any, even for me.

I heard that the actual Anesthesia is what causes the Hair loss. I am not an expert but wanted to know if anyone else had heard of this or experianced this first hand.

Not sure. I wear it longish and straight and I didn't really even realize it happened until it started coming back in and the short pieces were sticking up with winter static. Seems like I had more hair in my hands after a shower from about months 4-6. Pony tail got a little thinner, but even my stylist didn't notice till the re-growth started. All in all, not that bad. the "stick ups" lay right down with a dampened hand. It grows really fast since I started taking Biotin.< /p>

Mine started coming out the first month so I made a drastic move and cut it super short and dyed it blond. Hey it's only hair. With this style I didn't have to wash it as much and didn't need to use heat to blow dry or curl. I also used Wen hair products. This seems to have helped alot

I am a little over 2 months out (Dec 17th was surgery) and I haven't experienced hair loss yet. I have lost about 58lbs since surgery, and 127 since the beginning of October, so that's a LOT in just under 5 months time. I feel like I really should have started to lose by now...

However, here's the thing: I have always had trouble with my periods -- since the last year of high school, and as a result have always had serious issues with anemia. One time I was so anemic that my hair started falling out, not in HUGE clumps, but enough to worry me and send me to the doc. It was discovered that I was so anemic I needed a blood transfusion. (This is the only out-patient transfusion I've had as a result of my period -- I'd been hospitalized twice before and had extensive transfusions both times.) Anyway, the ER doctor I originally went to was an idiot and just told me I was losing my hair. It was a clinic doctor I went to later that recognized that Iron DEFICIENCY is a major cause for Hair loss and she checked for other symptoms, and sure enough, that was the problem. After this incident, I never had significant problems with hair loss again.

Over the past several years I have had better health care and have been able to (mostly) keep my period under control and my Iron levels are now in the normal range for the first time in YEARS.

In the past, I have also had trouble getting enough Protein in throughout the week. Some days I did, some days I didn't. Prior to surgery, and after, I am (most days!) getting more Protein in than I did pre-surgery which is great for my iron levels.

Based on my experiences and correlating that to what the article said about iron deficiency, I really think the key is to keep an eye on your iron levels, take additional iron supplements if needed (they have types that are easier on the stomach) and see your regular doctor as often as you can to make sure your levels are OK. I obviously don't know this for sure, but I feel like if the Biotin, Water, protein, and Multivitamins don't seem to stave it off, then maybe a little extra iron will help!

I'm 6 months out, I lost some of my hairline? I thought i was imagining it until i just noticed some growth there. So I'm hoping no more loss. I've been taking Biotin religiously since month 2.

I just noticed above comment...I had to start taking Iron about a month ago after my 6 mo labs came back as very low, border anemic. That may be contributing to the regrowth as well.

@@Bonawanabfree I've heard that before but I've had 3 c-sections and never lost any hair...unless they are using so other drug? I'm not so sure about that though people get put to sleep everyday in surgery and don't lose hair.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
