I am really confused about foods that are tolerable and not , like people have been eating toasted Bagels and everythings alright ? I am new at this so am not sure how anytihng works but i wanted to know a few things.

1- Does anyone eat hot dogs ? and if so when after surgery did they first have one

2- How about string cheese?

3- salads ? lettuce and all that?

3- Does anyone tolerate pizza? if so , which is the easiest

I know i will lose my cravings since i recently just got surgery but i just wanted to know what i can have say i would go to a restaurant with some friends.

Did you not get info from dietician before surgery? Usually they give very good instructions. Most frown on breads, beef, carbonated soda's, etc. There are very good websites to assist with this.

I encourage you to be very careful. Yes, many people try the foods that got us in this shape in the first place.....and end up having problems.

Soft foods, grilled chicken, baked fish, tuna, mushie veggies, Soups, cottage cheese, puddings, Jello, cheesy eggs, are just a few things I choose from.

Some people can tolerate more than others. Many however, end up with complications from eating the wrong foods.

Good luck....

To answer your questions;

First for me, none of the foods you listed were allowed until you are to the solid stage, which could be several weeks depending on your surgeon.

Hot dogs: I can't handle hot dogs, some bander's do fine, but for me they want to come back up. I think its the skin as such.

String cheese: I have no problem with as long as I chew very well.

Salad: It seems odd to me but I can eat salad all day long and have never had a problem. I really like to sprinkle over top a little chicken that I've put in my magic bullet along with some Mandarin oranges, slivered almonds, and Chinese noodles. Like the Asian salad at McDonald's.

Pizza: is another story in its self. Some times I won't have problem and other times I do. I have resorted to just eating a little of the topping and forget the crust. Of course I have to say EVERYONE is different so you may or may not have problems with these items. My advise is to take your time eating, don't be rushed and chew 20 to 30 times each bite.

As for cravings I found that a lot of the things I craved before are just not or don't seem to be the same. I also used to drink crystal light all the time but now It's just way to sweet.

As for restaurants, my advise is stay away from pastas & breads, stick with salads, Soups, fish works well for most. Do Protein first, then veggies. CHEW CHEW CHEW like its your last bite. Enjoy the food and if you feel any discomfort stop and enjoy the conversation.

Best of luck in your adventure to a new life.

1- Does anyone eat hot dogs ? and if so when after surgery did they first have one

I had a pretty strict post op diet, so was on liquids, for 2 weeks, full liquids another 2 weeks, then mushies for another 2! Following that I was ok for regular food. I can't tell you exactly how long, but yes I have eaten hot dogs all along since then. When my restriction was the tightest, I avoided the bun. Each day with the band is a new one, so I guage how I am feeling for the day, if my Breakfast goes slow, I am very cautious, and would avoid them, if I feel good, I try it one bite at a time, giving myself a little time to see if it is going to go ok.

Overall hot dogs are not a real healthy food, they are full of nitrates, and sodium....we could and should make healthier choices most of the time. But hot dogs are part of every day life around here with grandkids and cookouts, so we do eat them....me included!!!

2- How about string cheese?

Yes, I eat it regularly, along with the small packages of cheddar that they sell in the same area at the store. I take them with me, when I know I will want to snack on something. I take them to the movie for instance. Cheese is a big part of my snack diet.

3- salads ? lettuce and all that?

I was really afraid to try lettuce, thinking it would be so hard to digest---it went very easy!! I try to keep to crisp greens. I have had some spinach leaves that were kind of wilty and they didn't do as easy, I felt like it was harder on my band to pass them through. I also watch the skins on like bell peppers and cucumbers, they seem harder to digest. I peel the cucumbers....and I add carrots, and radishes, anything I have on hand, toss some cheese on, maybe a boiled egg, or some tuna....sprinkle with some sunflower seeds, and a bit of dressing...and I call it lunch and dinner lots of days!!!! It is my summer favorite!!!

3- Does anyone tolerate pizza? if so , which is the easiest

I eat pizza on occasion. Unlike most it is not the crust that gets me it is the marinara sauce gives me massive heartburn!!! I choose thin crust...and can usually eat a single piece of pizza. If we are elsewhere and they have thick crust, I eat a couple of bites, then just eat the remaining toppings---it is usually enough to fill me up completely.

The only foods I have ever PB'd on were a yeasty glazed donut, and popcorn chicken. The donut, I took 2 bites, and it felt like it swelled up to the size of a bowling ball in my belly!!! Never again! I avoid raised donuts!!!! The popcorn chicken, was my own fault. I bought my granddaughter a cup of popcorn chicken at Walmart while we were shopping, I was walking along, not thinking, picked one up, popped it in my mouth chewed a time or 2 and swallowed, just like in the old days. About half way down my throat, I realized what I just did, and we left, before we could get to the car, I was hurting. I slimed all the way home, and ended up tossing it not long after getting home...I have since eaten it...and chewed it well, with no problems at all.

Everyone's bands will react differently, and as I started out, everyday yours may act differently for you. Just try to experiment carefully, avoid things you know are bad for you, is the easiest!!! Try to attempt something at home the first time or 2. Take a single bite, and chew well, and then wait and see how it does. Do not eat until you are full, by then it is too late, just eat until you no longer feel hunger, then by the time everything settles, you are full, but not painfully so.

I could have lost more weight if I were to eliminate more foods from my diet, but I choose not to. I liked my life rprior to the band with the exception of my weight. I have not changed a lot except the amount of food I eat, and now that I have lost weight, my ability to move with ease has allowed me to exercise more.. Before that would have seemed horrible!! Now I actually enjoy getting my heart rate up, and challenging myself. I walk every day...and don't hurt doing it! The rest of the weight will come off, in the meantime, I am enjoying the life I have now.

I love my band---hope you find you love yours as well!!!

I didnt eat any of those foods until I was well onto solids, months probably.

But until my last fill I would have handled any of them just fine.

I could eat the hot dog itself, but a hot dog with a bun - I could eat it, but I'm not sure I could be bothered and it woudl cause me discomfort and I probably couldnt eat the whole thing. Same with pizza - we only ever eat pizza that I've made, base and all and I make the thinnest, crispiest base possible and healthy toppings and it STILL gives me problems, really hard to eat, not work the effort. A toasted bagel, I'd probably eat half of one for breakfast and enjoy it but I'd have to eat it carefully.

But probably for the first six months on low restriction levels I could eat those things easily.

it kind of comes gradually, I know its hard to imagine but you truly dont miss those foods, once they start to cause you grief, you just naturally dont want them anymore.

We had donuts here the other day - REAL donuts, not those revolting Krispy Kreme things, big round jam ball donuts with sugar all over the outside. Donuts are more like sweet bread, less like pastry in Australia and can be huge. I would have eaten 4 of them previously, they literally did not tempt me in the slightest because I knew the pain they'd cause me.

I don't eat hot dogs due to the bread. Soft bread can be very painful. I do eat my own pizza. I make a very thin crust and put stuff on the top and eat it slowly. It's good and I like it. But I can only eat about half of a small pizza. Still it fills me up and makes me happy. I don't eat string cheese because I'm too old for that stuff, but I can eat a salad if I go very, very slowly. If I have salad, I have a small bowl of it and it's pretty good. I also eat a lot of southern food like pork chops, smothered steak, barbecued ribs and stuff like that. This is Protein and I always include it. In addition, I eat southern baked Beans with ribs and they go down pretty well. They're easy to make and good though pretty sugary. Smothered steak is very tender and easy to get down especially with gravy, but it is heavy on grease. All Southern food is heavy on grease. But my favorite thing lately is V8 juice.< /p>

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
