Thank you!

I started extremely overweight (351) My doctor only required a 3 day liquid diet so I didn't really lose any weight prior to surgery. The first 60 days or so after surgery I mostly focused on Water, Vitamins and Protein, and also trying to eat small bites slowly. This is the area I struggled with the most. After about 60 days I started walking a bit and more focus on Protein intake. After 3 months I really focused on my carb count and protein. I am really strict about this to this day. Very low carb/high protein diet. Less than 20 net carbs a day and over 120 grams of protein per day. In November I joined a gym, got myself a personal trainer, and started working out 4-5 days a week. I do feel so much better! Here's to the next 7 months!

I started at 373, I'm at 361 now & my Dr wants me to lose 20 more before my surgery on April 21st. It's nice to know what is possible with my current weight, thank you for sharing. How tall are you? I've got to get my exercise going, my Dr wants me to focus on that to try & lose the other 20lbs.

I'm 5'6.

You got this!

I also cut out all caffeine about 3 months prior to surgery. I was a big diet soda drinker and changing over to strictly Water helped at the beginning. I am far from an expert on anything but my best advice is:

  1. Don't weigh yourself everyday. You don't need the added stress! From the beginning, I only weigh myself monthly.
  2. Focus on Water, Vitamins, Protein - in that order especially at the beginning. I remember the first few weeks thinink it would be an impossibility to even drink 8 oz. of water. It does get easier and better.
  3. Walk, walk, walk - as much as you can before surgery and as soon as you can right after
  4. Eliminate all bad carbs - flour, rice, Pasta, sugar, potatoes, bread, crackers, etc. I am a strict on this. I think it has really helped with my weight loss

Just a few tips. I know you will do great!

I'm 5'6" also.

I've never been a soda drinker so that has been easy. Being from the south I love sweet tea & I'm doing good with just unsweetened most of the time. I need to work on the caffeine bur I do love it. Lol

Oh & of course carbs are my downfall. I'm trying hard with that one!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm so excited for my surgery day to get here!

My Vitamins are going good most days. I had to get some chewable one because that horse pill called Calcium was hard to get down twice a day. Going much better now. :-)

Just a FYI. I found a calcium citrate capsule at Vitamin Shoppe that I have been taking for the past 6 months. My Dr. said it was fine. Each capsule is 250 mg so I take 2 capsules, 3 times a day. I take a separate Vitamin D in the morning. They are pretty cheap and really easy to take. I hated the chewables!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
