How long will it all take?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My husband and I have decided to take the plunge!! Feb 20th is the date of our first consult with our doctor.

My question to you all is, what was the timeline from first consult to operation?

I'm guessing it's something like 4 to 6 consults that u have to have with your doctor before you even know a surgery date, then there's the 6 week pre-op diet. I'm thinking it's going to be July or so until we even get to have the op!

I'm so excited/impatient that I just want to have it all now!!

Also, how long were you all in hospital and off work for after your op?

Thanks for the info :)

Totally depends on your insurance requirements. Some have been really short and others up to a year. Mine required 6 month overview with monthly weigh ins and a net loss ...among other things. Call your company and get a copy of their requirements.

Still to broad range to give you a good answer. If your insurance doesn't require any time frames for weighins it would the be based on your surgeons requirements. ( my surgeon only requires 1 day of liquid diet and schedules people typically in 2 weeks once they have insurance approval. I have read others that surgeons scheduled months out.)

For me it took nine months to get through the process but my insurance required 6 months supervised diet/weigh in with a physician prior to approving.

My first appt with surgeon Jan 23, 2014, surgery was March 17, 2014 - 2 months start to finish. I had no weight in requirements for insurance, just the pre-op testing and 2 weeks of liquid diet.< /p>

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
