2.5 Months Out & FAIL

Recommended Posts

Someone wrote "You still have a life to live even after surgery. Finding a balance that works for you long term is essential."

Love that...thank you.

I am following this one as I think there's a lot of good feedback, reminders, etc in this whole thread.

Sugery on 3/17/15.....thank you all!

Postscript to my NOLA trip ...

Last night I went back to the blank meals on MFP I hadn't filled out while in NOLA last week and did my best to approximate some dishes like "over-the-moon sauces" and "mystery pork gumbo." Turns out, you can do this pretty well.

For example, since most sauces are high in fat, I just chose another high-in-fat sauce and recorded that. I also learned there are some (confirmed) pork gumbos listed in MFP.

So it turns out that my big splurge dinner on Thursday night (with 1 slice of luscious bread with butter, 3 fried oysters, 1/2 a bowl of pork gumbo, and red wine) was almost 1,000 calories, 86 carbs and 29 Protein grams. I'm actually happy to learn all this, and I don't regret a single mouthful. And I'm so pleased that my sleeve helped me to resist eating a second piece of bread, 3 more fried oysters and the rest of the pork gumbo.

Sleeve + MFP = power + knowledge :)

Here's my blog post of how I fell off the wagon and was able to recover and get back on track.

This is a good thread with a lot of good advice. I hit 4 months recently and felt the tick-tock of that honeymoon clock. @@CowgirlJane is right, I have to stay focused on this first year. Great advice.

But I clearly did not get surgery on my brain because my brain is still very messed up. It still wants carbs and junk. @@VSGAnn2014 said something about consistency and I'm hoping with time and consistency that my brain will start to change. But I do stumble (sometimes into a piece of chocolate) and I get up, brush myself off and keep at it. I am stumbling a little less than before so that's positive.

To the OP, you came back from vacation and posted on here for advice. That clearly shows you are ready to get back on track so good for you for brushing yourself off and getting back at it. I have a vacation planned in September (right around my 1 year mark) and am going to an all-inclusive resort (unlimited food and alcohol) so the advice provided in this post is very helpful for me. I don't love alcohol unless it's sugary so I need to plan on not drinking. I need to stick with my meals and not graze.

I have my surgery date set for 3/9 and I am going to Aruba in November. I am so excited! Everything is all inclusive so we don't have to worry about paying for food or drinks. All I have to worry about is moderation and making good choices. I know that the rest of my life is not going to be full of chicken and salads. I know that I am getting a second chance at being healthy and I am going to take that chance and I am going to run with it. But if every once in a while I want a bite of a cheesecake, I am going to have a bite. The difference is I am not going to have a whole piece like I would have before.

Moderation, make good choices, and realize that we are all human is what is going to make this work. Knowing that every now and again you need to eat that small piece of chocolate so you don't eat ten other things trying not to eat it. Knowing that even if you eat a piece or even two (gasp) that you have not ruined your life and you can get back on the healthy ban wagon. Yes... we have all done something that has gotten us to this point, we have all over eaten, indulged, and one of our seven sins is totally gluttony.

No, there is no surgery to have on our brain that makes us want to work out and not eat our favorite unhealthy foods. But knowing that if we are able to make better food choices and make better life choices that we are going to be healthier and happier, then we are all going to get through this together and we can all succeed.

So I had a weekend of being BAD in New Orleans. I have lost 51 pounds since pre-op and ahead of goal. Last Wed. I flew into NO with hubs and OMG. I didn't eat as bad as I would pre-surgery by no means. BUT I didn't make the best choices either. Bloody Mary's, butter laden crab claws, and a 1/2 a beignet. I know, I'm going to hell right?? Lol No, would just love to hear from some of the vets that might have had the same lapse and was able to get right back on goal.

Oh and for the pre-ops that want to know about eating post-op. Yes, for some you'll be able to eat what you want without getting sick. But no where near as much and alcohol doesn't have any different effect on me than before. I skipped the sugary mixes and drank straight liquor.

I already know I'm the odd man out but taken from somebody whose about to take this plunge, I'm glad to know life can be normal! I mean you can still go out, socialize and still feel free to participate as long as you know your boundaries! That's a good thing to me.

Wow, I'm not sure if I'm glad I'm following this or not. Lots and lots of very GOOD AND CONTROVERSIAL posts. I'll just be the Pollyanna and remind everyone that we are all in this together. We Celebrate each others victories and support each other when we relapse. And believe me, this Pollyanna is far from perfect. I have carb cravings that I've given into a few times over the past 12 weeks. But like many posts have said, I wake up the next morning, brush myself off and get back on the "high Protein, lots of fluid" train.

Just think of the Chubawumba song: "I get knocked down, but I get up again."

At first I was a little frustrated by the "tension" in this post... but, I am fine with it now. I have learned that if someone's comments sting me, then I should really try and figure out the root cause of that hurt... there may be something in that pushes on a bruise from the past.

This is a great post with lots of super replies. I believe that you have to splurge once in a while, just don't make a habit of it. Granted...I'm still in the honeymoon phase (3.5 months out)....

This has been a pretty interesting post to follow so far. And I can totally understand the OP's situation. I live in Louisiana, we go to bed thinking about what we are going to eat and Celebrate tomorrow. Hell, everyday is a celebration of food and drink in our state. There's a festival almost every weekend somewhere in the state, and you can bet some of the finest cooking and booze will be available. Anyway, back to my boudin and burbon. (just kidding, I'm having a nasty Protein shake) "Laissez les bons temps rouler"

My point is that NONE of us are going to be 100% perfect in our eating all the time. For goodness sake, we have to LIVE. So you go on vacation and overdo it a little? Get back on track the next day. Just because you break one plate unloading the dishwasher, doesn't mean you have to break the rest along with it.....

I know I'm a noob and in the "honeymoon" period of my surgery. But I'm also looking at this long term. If, ONCE IN A WHILE, I let my hair down a little and have a good time, I'm going to try to make sure I'm getting right back on track as soon as possible.I KNOW it gets harder as time goes on. But if I'm making good choices 95% of the time, I know I have a chance of keeping the weight off. I don't know. Maybe some of you can bookmark this thread and throw it in my face in a year or two when I'm struggling with maintenance, lol. I only know what I know NOW.

UGH. Sometimes the holier than thou attitudes on here are too much.

Haha. Someone had 'liked' this post recently and I loved reading my comment from when I was 6 months out.

Here I am, 2+ years out now, and I've been maintaining my weight for over a year, and I still believe everything I wrote. I still let my hair down once in a while (Just recently did a bit on Thanksgiving), but always right back to it again. Still following the 'rules' 95% of the time. Still working for me. When it doesn't, I'll change things up ;) I've still got a long road ahead for sure.

Omg! I'm so glad to hear that not everyone is post surgical angels that become robots after surgery! I think if we do what is right 99% of the time we can be bad on vacation! How do you not eat in new Orleans?! I will go on vacation and make a mess out of myself and come home, repent and get back on track. You made my day!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
