I am 5 weeks post op and I certainly have my down days. I am not sure I was fully prepared for just how long I would not be feeling that well although my surgery did not go to plan so that is one of the reasons healing is taking longer. I am not sure I was really prepared for how hard I am fining it when as a family we go out for a meal and its simply a major waste of money for me to even purchase a small meal as all I would be able to eat is an egg (breakfast seems to be my smallest meal). Cannot order the Cappuccino like everyone else as I cannot dink and eat and with them not knowing I had a sleeve op (they know I had the other things I had done), keeping it a secret is becoming harder as time goes on as its obvious something isn't right. Its my choice not to share the information with anyone, I never want my children to know as I have always advocated for a healthy lifestyle and was a reflection of that until about 7 years ago. I miss being able to eat out without concern, restaurants just don't seem to have extremely small meals, even Entrees seem to be too big. I am also struggling with sleep, I had restless leg syndrome prior to the surgery and it is 100 times worse now so I barely sleep. My ability to eat seems to fluctuate from days where I cannot eat very much at all, perhaps 4 spoonfuls at a meal to days like yesterday when I was able to consume 1/2 a wrap for lunch and the other half later in the day. I still experience sharp pains down my left hand side under the rib cage. I remain unsure of how much to eat at 6 weeks and I am concerned about stretching the sleeve.

@@swtnss - You really need to sit down with your nutritionist and go over this. At 6 weeks I was told to eat regular food as tolerated and try to keep meals between 600 - 800 calories. I found that keeping a food diary was a great help in this. I eat out often and just get doggy bags for everything. For me it's the company more than the food. As for a beverage, I just order a Water and then push it to the side. However I repeat, speak to your nutritionist. She should be able to give you sample menus. It's Protein first, then veg and I always leave simple carbs (breads, pastas, rice, etc...) for last or not at all.

@@swtnss I agree with BLERDgirl that you should consult your nutritionist. My strategy when I eat out is to always get something small like a cup of chili, an appetizer, or an a la carte item and ask for a to go container right off the bat for my leftovers or just ask for the whole thing to be brought in a to go container to begin with. As for Breakfast, I've never had any problem asking a restaurant to just bring me a scrambled egg with a little cheese mixed in. I am fortunate that my surgeon only requires me to stop drinking five minutes before eating, so I can also order a cup of coffee and so long as I finish it before the food is brought out and I don't get any refills, I don't have any problems.

You just have to get a bit creative with your menu options and ALWAYS put Protein first. I will order chicken or shrimp appetizers or a cup of chili when I'm out for lunch or dinner. If something comes with sides, I will just ask that they not be brought at all or I will order something my husband will eat and give it to him.

I am 3 years post op and it has changed, even saved my life. I was super morbidly obeses and am now normal sized. It remains hard, but for different reasons. I suggest staying focused on why you did this....keep your eye on the prize. The uncomfortable early months soon become a distant memory...hang in there.

@@BLERDgirl, I had a similar experience. Surgery was very easy. I had trouble getting liquids down, so they kept me 2 nights on IV fluids. I didn't have that feeling of having exercised a lot. By the time the 2 days were over, it felt as though nothing had happened! The pattern of eating everything gradually with no problems and getting fluids in was the same. I feel very fortunate to have had the sleeve surgery.

I am exactly one week out as of today. It's been tough to get the required amount of Protein and Water in however, all in all, its been great. Minimal pain, nothing too serious. I dropped a whopping 17lbs in one week which is cray cray yall. Anyways- thought I'd throw my two cents out there since this is mostly a womens thread!

I had my surgery one week before my 26th birthday and was so depressed on my birthday. I just stayed at home in bed crying. I wasn't sure if I made the right decision but now 3-1/2 months post op I wish I would have had the surgery when I was 20 yrs old. Love my progress and I can't walk down the street and see anyone I know without them saying how great I look. I promise it will get better!

@@swtnss are you taking anything for your restless leg syndrome? I have it bad too but take .25 mg of mirapex at night or when I need it, like long car rides, and its been a great remedy for me. If you're not taking anything, talk to your primary care. I have also read that magnesium can help.

At 2.5 weeks I was freaking miserable and kicking myself. At 4.5 months, I am down 70 lbs and feel like a whole new world is in front of me. Please take comfort and know that is a common reaction to this journey and you WILL get past it and feel and be awesome!

I absolutely have no regrets. I would recommend the surgery to anyone who needed it. I have had an easy time from what I can tell, with very little pain. I woke up in recovery and a short time realized that I needed to go to the bathroom. I sat up and thought "wow, very little pain" I walked pushing my IV to the bathroom, came out and asked to continue walking. I wanted to cough up the junk that settles in the chest during surgery. I only walked with a nurse in recovery, I was passed on to my room with the message "she is already walking fine by herself". I walked and walked the halls until they released me. I had nausea after coming home that day, but I think it was because I ate yogurt and it was day 2... I went back to clear fluids for a few days and have been fine every since. I have never gagged or thrown up, have no idea what the slime is that I read about. I did experience gas at times but walked it out. I can't say my stomach ever hurts, but I can tell when my stomach isn't agreeing with a food, so I quit... To me it is easy to listen to your body... So my advice would be to listen, and never force anything or eat anything you don't like or that isn't agreeing with you.

There isn't a food out there that I like more than knowing I will finally be a healthy weight in the near future.... I am excited about my future.

I eat out often, my husband enjoys that and I wouldn't want him to miss out (he's always been avg wt) so I go along and eat what is available for me. I've always eaten slow, he eats at a normal rate, so finally, we are finishing dinner @ same time since I eat so little. Thankfully Mexican is my favorite food and refried Beans was the first food I ate out.

We go to the gym 4 times a week together, and my husband is my greatest encourager.

I have found I am not interested even in the looks of fried foods whatsoever, there is no temptation there, and so many things taste sweet to me, I can't imagine a dessert like I used to. I do long for fresh vegetables but for now settle for V8. I will say that sometimes the smell of food makes me hungry... And wish they had done something with that lol.

Only negative is I can't seem to get into cooking like I used to, I never followed recipes and tasted as I went. It was difficult @ Christmas trying to cook, and I make a mean Mac n cheese and to see my husband say "it doesn't taste like your Mac n cheese" And back to the kitchen I went to try and make it better... Gee how do I cook without tasting? I probably ate a whole meal while cooking prior to this.... But not that big of deal, my husband has been learning to cook. Oh, and BM's are not the same but I understand why.

I haven't lost a huge amt of weight yet, but I can fly up and down my steps with no without pain and I was on my knees trying to reach something under my bed yesterday, I was crawling around and it hit me "you have not done this in a very long time" I am getting healthier and more fit and I wish This had been available 25 years ago. No regrets!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
