Gaining?..Is that normal?

Recommended Posts

I was banded last Thursday (24th). I gained 5 pounds in one day while I was in the hospital. I'm following the diet carefully but still haven't lost any weight. Is that normal?

I am right along there with you. I was banded on the 9th of May and the first week after surgery I lost 10 lbs. The second and third week I stayed at the same weight. I'm going on my 4th week after surgery and I gained 3 lbs back. Needless to say this is beginning to get very frustrating. I have moved onto eating mushy foods, but I am still walking every day.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is just "normal". Is there anyone else out there who experienced the same kind of disappointment before your first fill??

I am on my third week and I lost 15lbs, but now I have gained back 5lbs too after going back on soft foods. I was wondering the same thing. I also feel like I am eating more. The Dr. said it was most likely because the swelling went down. But I am not sure either about the gaining? I have been walking too! I hope the first fill in a few weeks will help!

The doctor told me it's very normal to gain post op prior to your first fill. Most people have very little restriction so they eat a little more and have some swelling which makes the scale go up too. Plus, there is not as much activity.

It's okay not to lose too much now. This time is for healing not for losing. You will lose when you get your fills. Just relax and let your body heal. As long as you are following the rules, you will be fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
